Progress on $35M Humboldt Broncos permanent memorial slower than expected
The manager for a Saskatchewan city planning a multi-purpose building in remembrance of a deadly junior hockey bus crash four years ago says plans are moving more slowly than had been hoped.
The City of Humboldt announced plans a year ago to build a tribute centre, including a gallery honouring the 16 people killed and 13 injured in the April 6, 2018, collision with a transport truck.
The $35-million price tag also includes an arena, a fitness and physiotherapy area, and a permanent memorial at the site of the crash north of Tisdale, Sask.
Pope Francis' apology met with mixed emotions: Mamakwa
Pope Francis apologized last week for the Roman Catholic Church’s involvement in residential schools in front of nearly 200 people.
An Indigenous delegation made up of Indian Residential School survivors, leaders, knowledge keeps and youth travelled to the Vatican last week to have meetings with the Pope.
Kiiwetinoong MPP, Sol Mamakwa said in Question Period at Queens Park on Monday (April 5, 2022) that the apology was met with mixed feelings.
“Rage...sadness...hurt...relief, and beginnings of hope,” said Mamakwa. “We are still united in grief.”

It's been four years since the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash. In 2018, the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team bus and a semi collided at a rural intersection near Tisdale, Sask, resulting in the deaths of 16 people on the bus - 10 players, the head coach and assistant coach, radio announcer, statistician, trainer and bus driver; 13 others were injured. In July, the truck driver was formally charged. A GoFundMe page for the victims and their families raised over $15 million, the largest ever in Canada, and was transferred to the new Humboldt Broncos Memorial Fund.

OPP searching for missing 14-year-old youth near Fort Frances
The Rainy River District Ontario Provincial Police are asking for the public's assistance in locating 14-year-old Ryan Smith of Fort Frances.
On April 4, 2022, at around 11:55 p.m. the OPP received a report of a missing youth. The youth was last seen in Fort Frances on the evening of April 4th, 2022.
Smith was last seen in black track pants, a black jacket with a white stripe, white running shoes, and a bucket type hat. Smith is an Indigenous youth weighing approx. 160lbs and stands 5'10".
Ice Dogs release statement responding to recent allegations
The Dryden GM Ice Dogs have responded to allegations of racism brought forward following a social media post last week after a playoff game between Dryden and the Fort Frances Lakers.
The allegation, levied by a billet family in Fort Frances accuses players from the Ice Dogs of using offensive racial slurs on the ice during games. The post also alleges that Ice Dogs players "like to purposely hurt other players on the ice".

Ontario prepared for another wildland fire season
Another wildland fire season is upon us as it kicked off on Friday (April 1, 2022), and runs through until October 31.
Last year Ontario faced one of the worst fire seasons in recent memory as there were 1,198 wildland fires – with approximately 793,325 hectares of forests burned. This number includes the Kenora 51 Fire, which was a 200,000-hectare fire, the largest since the province started keeping statistics in 1960.
OPP investigating Saturday's sudden death
Members of the Dryden OPP are investigating a sudden death on Memorial Avenue.
Police say on April 2 shortly after 7:30 p.m., members of the Dryden OPP and Northwest EMS responded to a death at a residence on Memorial Avenue.
The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Niall Knutson of Dryden. The OPP did not release the deceased’s cause of death.
The Dryden OPP Crime Unit, OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit and Chief Coroner for Ontario are all continuing to investigate the death.
Spring storm has sights set on region, 10 cm of snow expected
Though we’re a few weeks into spring it still may feel like winter for the next couple of days as a storm is expected to sweep through the region bringing with it some flurries.
Environment Canada says that a Dakota’s-based storm in the Northern United States is making its way eastward up into Northwestern Ontario.
“Expect up to 10 cm of snow for the area,” said Gerald Cheng Environment Canada Meteorologist. “Some areas could get slightly higher, but 10 cm is what we see in the forecast right now and it will start tonight and it will continue through Thursday morning.”
