Science North expanding further into Kenora

In an effort to expand tourism opportunities in Kenora and Thunder Bay the province has earmarked $1 million to support Science North’s Northwest Expansion Project.

The money will be funded through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) which will go towards a 4,000 square foot expansion of the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre.

The project will also lead Thunder Bay to receive a 33,750 square foot facility equipped with architectural and visitor experiences.

COVID-19 testing ends at Canadian borders today

Kenora MP Eric Melillo says he’s glad to see federal PCR testing requirements end at Canadian border crossings today, but he’s questioning the timing of the move.

During Adjournment Sessions at the House of Commons, Melillo noted he questioned federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos on when mandatory PCR testing will end at the border early this month, but says the Minister dodged the question.

Just two weeks later, Duclos announced that as of April 1, COVID-19 testing will no longer be required for fully vaccinated travellers entering Canada.

Carbon price rising to $50 a tonne today, adds 2.2 cents to a litre of gas

The national price on pollution will go up another $10 per tonne of greenhouse gas emissions as scheduled today in most provinces.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault is withstanding political pressure to delay or cancel the increase as fuel prices surge due mainly to the Russian invasion in Ukraine.

Guilbeault says the government is not going to stall or move backward on its climate action plan, of which the carbon price is seen as a "cornerstone" policy.

Vaccinated travellers to Canada no longer need to be tested for COVID-19

Vaccinated travellers can enter Canada without a COVID-19 test beginning today.

The change will spark a surge in travel bookings both into and out of the country, according to the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, although it's not likely to reach pre-pandemic levels yet.

People could still be randomly tested when they arrive and Health Canada requires anyone coming from outside the country to wear a mask in public for 14 days.

What to do if your basement floods

It’s that time of year again as we move into spring, temperatures begin to warm up and the snow begins to melt, which could cause the possibility of flooding or moisture seeping into your basement.

Owner of Northern Energy, Jon Patrick says he’s anticipating his phones to begin ringing soon as the snow begins to melt.

“Kenora and Keewatin it’s a unique area, there’s lots of rock so there’s lots of houses that are built of rock not necessary basements but crawlspace types of things,” said Patrick.

Government working to find out which Ukrainians coming to Canada need most help

Canada will extend some settlement services to fleeing Ukrainians, but they will not receive all of the same supports as typical refugees, the federal immigration minister said Wednesday.

Many Ukrainians who've applied to come to Canada are doing so under a special visitor visa program that would allow them to work and study for three years while they decide whether or not to return home.

So far about 60,000 Ukrainians and their families have applied to come to Canada under that program, and another 12,000 have come under traditional immigration streams since January.
