Ontario reaches $10-a-day child care deal with Ottawa
Ontario has reached a $13.2 billion agreement with the federal government that will lower fees for families and deliver an average of $10 a day child care by September 2025.
As a first step, all Ontario families with children five years old and younger in participating licensed child care centres will see their fees reduced, up to 25 per cent, to a minimum of $12 per day, retroactive to April 1, 2022.
Ice Dogs begin playoff tomorrow, Dudley-Hewitt Cup won't be contested
The Dryden GM Ice Dogs play their first game of the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) playoffs tomorrow (Tuesday, March 29, 2022) night against the Fort Frances Lakers, but the winner of the playdowns won't be crowned the Dudley-Hewitt Cup champion.
Last week, Hockey Canada, the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL), and the SIJHL announced a revised format for the Centennial Cup national championship tournament and the qualification requirements for entry into the tournament.
Melillo’s ‘not holding his breath’ for progress after Liberal, NDP partnership
Kenora MP Eric Melillo says he doesn’t believe the federal government will follow through on their new priorities after signing a deal with the NDP.
On March 22, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the federal Liberals have struck and signed a ‘Supply and Confidence’ deal with the federal NDP to govern the country until June 2025.
“What this means is that during this uncertain time, the government can function with predictability and stability, present and implement budgets and get things done for Canadians,” explained Trudeau.
Dryden City Hall will temporarily move at the end of March
Dryden City Hall will so move to the former Dryden Police Services building.
The City of Dryden would like the public to be aware, effective today (March 28, 2022), all City Hall Offices will be moved to 64 King Street (the former DPS building).
This move will only be temporary as it is necessary to complete the required upgrades and renovations at City Hall.
Canadian soccer fans rejoice as men's team clinches World Cup berth
Canadian soccer fans rejoiced upon seeing Canada's men's soccer team clinch a berth in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a 4-0 win over Jamaica on Sunday at BMO Field.
This is just the second time Canada's men's soccer team has reached the World Cup in its history and the first time since 1986.
The World Cup is considered to be the most prestigious international soccer event in the world, taking place every four years.
The 2022 World Cup will take place from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18.
Amber Alert cancelled, suspect in custody
RCMP say that an Amber Alert for two kidnapped children and their mother is now over.
Mounties say that a suspect is in custody and two young kids and their mother, who were at the centre of the alert, are safe.
The alert was first issued earlier on Saturday, March 26, by RCMP in British Columbia and included a 36-year-old man had kidnapped a woman and her two young children. The woman and kids hadn't been seen since March 24.
The Waasigan Transmission Line is moving on to yet another step in the approval process
Hydro One announced on March 21, 2022, that Ontario’s Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) has approved the amended Terms of Reference (ToR) for the proposed Waasigan Transmission Line between the Municipality of Shuniah, Town of Atikokan and City of Dryden.
The next step in the process is the Notice of Commencement for the project’s Environmental Assessment (EA).
Ehlers scores OT winner as Jets beat Blue Jackets
Nikolaj Ehlers scored on a breakaway 21 seconds into overtime to lift the Winnipeg Jets past the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 Friday night at Canada Life Centre.
Dominic Toninato, Josh Morrissey and Kyle Connor with his 41st of the season on a shorthanded breakaway in the first period also scored for the Jets.
Connor has eight goals and 12 assists during his 10 game points streak.
Adam Boqvist, Brendan Gaunce and Oliver Bjorkstrand did the goal scoring for the Blue Jackets.
Physician shortage closes Red Lake’s emergency room
Red Lake residents in an emergency situation may be out of luck this weekend.
The Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Hospital has announced that their emergency department will be closed between 8 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday, due to a shortage in local physicians able to work in the department.
Hospital leadership says people with emergency health issues should call 911 and request ambulance assistance, where they will be transported to Dryden’s hospital over 216 kilometres away.
Warrant issued for Toronto man after suspicious death in Dryden
A Dryden resident and a Toronto resident are both facing a number of charges after a suspicious death investigation in Dryden, and one suspect is still at large and being sought by police.
Police say if you see 19-year-old Nashawn Trevel Beals of Toronto, do not approach him and call 911 immediately. The OPP did not provide a photo of Beals, noting they don’t believe there are concerns for public safety at this time.
