Youth in custody after weapons call at Fort Frances High

The Fort Frances OPP says a youth is in custody, no injuries have been reported and there is no threat to public safety after a weapons call at Fort Frances High School today.

Police say they were contacted by the school in regards to a youth in possession of a knife and responded to the call shortly after 10:30 a.m. today.

The youth was immediately taken into custody. Their name was not released as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Warmer than average fall expected, with early snowfalls

September 22 marks the first day of Fall and temperatures have been steadily dropping in northwestern Ontario – but what can we expect next weather-wise?

Environment Canada Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says over the next week or so, residents will see seasonal-average temperatures around 14 degrees, with the risk of rain through the weekend.

The Dryden GM Ice Dogs have one more day to prepare for a back-to-back against the Kam River Fighting Walleye this weekend.

The Dogs open the 2022-2023 regular season against Kam River tomorrow night, with a second game on Saturday. Both will be held at the Dryden Memorial Arena with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.

Dryden will have a six-day break before they face off against the Wisconsin Lumberjacks on September 30 at home.

Over 500 youth learn about forestry, sustainability in Dryden

Dryden’s youth have been learning about the importance of the forestry sector in northwestern Ontario and Canada this week, as Domtar helps celebrate National Forestry Week.

Domtar has partnered with the Earth Rangers to help youth recognize the forests and animals that surround Dryden and make the area their home, as well as the importance of conservation and sustainability – with two shows at The Centre.

Stats Canada says Canada's homeownership rate fell in latest 2021 census release

Canada's homeownership rate is on the decline, with young adults in particular less likely to own a home in 2021 than they were a decade earlier, says Statistics Canada.

According to the latest census release, 66.5 per cent of Canadians owned a home in 2021, down from a peak of 69 per cent in 2011.

Housing prices have climbed considerably in recent years compared with Canadians' incomes. Statistics Canada says while the median household income grew by 18 per cent between 2016 and 2021, the average value of an owner-occupied home rose by 39.6 per cent. 

River Walkway closed until Sep. 30

Dryden’s river walkway in Cooper Park will be closed for the next week or so.

The City of Dryden is warning residents that the walkway from Cooper Park to Victoria Street will be closed for repairs until September 30, and users are asked to use the Earl Avenue sidewalk as an alternate route.

Public Works apologizes for the inconvenience, and anyone with questions or concerns is asked to contact them at 807-223-2367.

Sep. 21 Sports Update

The Dryden GM Ice Dogs are gearing up for their season opener this weekend.

The Dogs will be up against Kam River and the Fighting Walleye at 7:30 p.m. Friday night, at the Dryden Memorial Arena. It’s the first of a back-to-back at home, with another 7:30 p.m. puck drop on Saturday.

Saskatchewan Appeal Court removes injunction, allows Broncos lawsuit to proceed

The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal has set aside a temporary injunction that halted a lawsuit filed by some parents of those who died in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. 

Sixteen people were killed and 13 were injured when an inexperienced truck driver went through a stop sign and into the path of the junior hockey team's bus at a rural intersection near Tisdale, Sask., on April 6, 2018. 

A few months after the crash, a lawsuit was brought by the families of five who died. 

Rickford announces $1.4 million for 3 major Kenora projects

It was a big day for the Kenora community and Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford.

Rickford, Ontario’s Minister of Northern Development and Minister of Indigenous Affairs, toured the area yesterday to announce $1.4 million in work through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, all aimed to improve the quality of life in the Kenora community.
