"Grab here, amigo." I grabbed. "Hold on tight." I held on. "When you come back toward the shore and I blow whistle, you pull cord pronto!" Within seconds I was airborne. A loud "whoosh," a long strong jerk, and I was three hundred feet or so above the picturesque beach at Puerto Vallarta.

You guessed it...my first try at parasailing. Four-and-a-half minutes of indescribable ecstasy sandwiched between a few seconds of sheer panic. Talk about fun!

Girl set on fire in Saskatoon school faces long recovery, says grandmother

The family of a 15-year-old girl who was lit on fire at a Saskatoon high school has asked people to wear purple Tuesday when classes resume. 

“It is her favourite colour,” the girl’s grandmother said in an interview.  

“It’s going to be a very long recovery, and we’ve put it out there just to let her know that people are thinking of her and praying for her.”

Students are to return to Evan Hardy Collegiate on Tuesday, where last week a witness said the girl had liquid from a black canister poured onto her head which was then lit on fire. 

Juno Awards pulling Christian/Gospel category along with 3 others

The Juno Awards has told committee members that it is getting rid of four categories, including the Christian/Gospel category for the next round of awards in 2025.

The Canadian Press reports that it has verified a letter in which "organizers told committee members last week of plans to put on 'hiatus' reggae recording, children’s album, Christian/Gospel album and international album of the year."

Fire crews battle blaze size of a football field

Fire crews fought a fire the size of a football field at an East Kildonan park on Monday afternoon.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a grass fire at Kilcona Park. 

Crews arrived at the scene to a grass and bush fire, covering the size of a football field. A fire attack was quickly launched using specialized wildland firefighting equipment.

Crews knocked the fire down in under 20 minutes.

No injuries were reported.

Protesters get 6 1/2-year sentences for roles in Coutts border blockade

One of two men sentenced Monday to 6 1/2 years for firearms violations and mischief at the border blockade at Coutts, Alta., says the time he has already spent behind bars has changed him and his "solemn weapon” is now love.

"Stay strong, live free, spread love — not war," Anthony Olienick, reading from a prepared statement, told a Court of King’s Bench judge before sentencing.

“I've gained a stronger understanding into what divine destiny awaits me," he added.

City offers relief ahead of warmer weather expected

With warmer weather expected this week, the City of Winnipeg is giving residents opportunities to beat the heat. 

With temperatures expected to be around mid-20s to 30 degrees, a number of civic facilities across the city are open to the public to cool off with clean drinking water at hydration stations and air conditioning during regular operating hours.    

There are eight hydration stations for residents to get clean drinking water. They are at the following locations:

To no longer ‘suffer in silence’: raising awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day

Tuesday, September 10 is World Suicide Prevention Day.  

Established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO), the day aims to focus attention on the worldwide issue while reducing stigma and raising awareness among organizations, governments and the public – reinforcing the singular message that suicides are preventable. 

Winnipegger's trash, another person's treasure: Giveaway weekend coming up

This weekend Winnipegger's will be able to purge their houses and spaces of unwanted items that still have life left in them. 

Winnipeg's giveaway weekend is taking place September 14 and 15 all day. Any reusable, unwanted items taking up space can be placed at the end of a person's driveway for people to take.
