Providence University College and Theological Seminary welcomes back students

Providence University College and Theological Seminary in Otterburne is buzzing with activity as students begin to trickle back to campus for the new academic year.  

Dr. Nicholas Greco, the Provost at Providence, says they are expecting around 140 first-year students this fall, with numbers coming from across Canada and internationally. "We're excited to welcome these students and increase our total enrollment to over 1,000.” 

'Like being in prison': Via Rail passenger says people stranded without food, water

A tourist visiting Canada is questioning the safety of Via Rail after he says his phone was snatched from him by an employee when he was documenting a train delay that left passengers stranded as they ran out of food, water and working toilets.

Chip Malt was in Quebec over the long weekend to celebrate his father's 70th birthday in the province's capital, and said he boarded a Via Rail train from Montreal to Quebec City on Saturday.

Going from a walk-on for his collegiate football team to becoming one of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive backs, Brandon Alexander has had a difficult road to get to where he is today.

"I was playing out of position in high school for three and a half years. I was playing defensive end and I was 140-150, but then I walked over to UCF (University of Central Florida) and I had my opportunity there when they put me at the corner," Alexander says. 

Man missing from downtown since Friday safely located

The Winnipeg Police Service says a missing 43-year-old man has been safely located.

The WPS said in a release sent out on Sunday that the man was last seen in the Downtown area of Winnipeg, at approximately 7 p.m. on Friday, August 30, 2024.

Police said the man may have been travelling to the Westman region of Manitoba but had not been seen.

Late on Monday afternoon the WPS sent out another release saying the man had been found safe.

Preventing dry rot

Not everybody gets "turned on" over management concepts, but most of us can profit from such information at home or church or school. Even as individuals we may find some of these principles coming in handy.

If organizations are not to become stagnant, they must renew themselves—stay continually fresh. Some years back I found some excellent guidelines for this shared by John W. Gardner in a Harper's article entitled "How to Prevent Organizational Dry Rot." I've condensed some of his thoughts here.

Firefighters battle 3 structure fires within 90 minutes

Winnipeg emergency workers were kept busy Saturday evening.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to three structure fires the night of Saturday, August 31, according to a City of Winnipeg media release.

At 8:37 p.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of fire at a two-storey residential dwelling in the 1900 block of William Avenue West.

Federal health spending has outpaced provinces, analysis shows

Despite castigation from provincial premiers over lagging federal contributions to health spending, an analysis of 20 years of health funding data shows that federal transfers have mostly outpaced increases to provincial health budgets. 

In 2023, federal health transfers amounted to $47.1 billion, a 212 per cent increase over 2005, when the transfers were $15.1 billion. Total spending by all 10 provinces grew in that time to $221.9 billion up from $86.2 billion, an increase of 158 per cent.

Saltdogs snap Goldeyes' streak at seven games, playoff tickets on sale now

The Lincoln Saltdogs (37-62) defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 4-1 at Blue Cross Park Sunday afternoon, ending the Goldeyes’ season-high seven-game win streak.
