Captain Jon Phipps of Portage pilots harrowing Manitoba wildfire rescue mission
Captain Jon Phipps, a helicopter instructor at 3 Canadian Forces Flying Training School (CFFTS) in Southport, found himself thrust from the routine of training into the heart of the Manitoba wildfire crisis this past weekend.
Alongside fellow aviators, he piloted a CH-146 Griffon helicopter on a critical mission, airlifting evacuees from the fire-threatened northern Manitoba community of Pukatawagan to safety.
Battle continues against wildfire threatening Flin Flon and surrounding areas
The fight to keep a wildfire at bay near Flin Flon continues.
As of Wednesday morning, Flin Flon has not seen any structural fires. Creighton, Saskatchewan, located east of Flin Flon, on the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border, has also not seen any structural fires as of 11:30 p.m. on Monday.
The city says there are currently over 200 personnel fighting the fire.

Officials in Manitoba and Saskatchewan say areas affected by wildfires aren't expected to see much relief in the weather forecast in the coming days.
More than 30,000 people in those provinces have been forced to leave their homes as wildfires threaten their communities.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said Tuesday that there would be challenging days ahead due to a lack of rain in the forecast.

The Adult and Teen Challenge of Central Canada campus in Denare Beach, Sask., has been destroyed by wildfire.
The confirmation came shortly after 11:30 Tuesday morning, following a CHVN interview with regional director Allen Lagore earlier in the day. At the time of the interview, around 10:30 a.m., Lagore said they were still awaiting word on the status of their property.
