The South East Cornerstone Public School Division passed its budget for the 2023-24 school year at its meeting last Wednesday. The budget, which carries a total revenue of $114 million, operating expenses of $115.3 million, and capital expenses of $7.6 million had a public sector operating deficit of $1,234,542. Converted to a cash basis, this has an operating cash deficit of $2.9 million.  

Spring seeding is essentially finished in Saskatchewan, and that applies to the southeast corner as well. The latest crop report from the provincial Ministry of Agriculture indicated some producers have a little left to go with greenfeed acres, and there has been some reseeding due to grasshoppers, but other than that, things are done.  

When the mercury climbs above 32° in southern Saskatchewan and the overnight low is above 16°, Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a heat warning. These warnings, however, are not to just let people know that it is hot out. After all, just going outside you can tell that it is hot out. Instead, the warnings are issued because of the potential dangers of the heat. 

Farmers continue to make progress with seeding the 2023 crop but are still slightly behind their five-year average.  

In the most recent crop report, released by the provincial Ministry of Agriculture, farmers in the southeast indicated they had 94 per cent of the crop in the ground. This was up from 80 per cent the previous week, and just behind the five-year average of 97 per cent.  

A recent policy paper from Action Canada is pointing out some key recommendations for helping those who are living in community housing during incidents of extreme heat, similar to what is happening in southeast Saskatchewan right now.

It was a project that started in 2017 at the University of Saskatchewan with a grant application. Six years later, and with a lot of hard work, the first-ever satellite built in Saskatchewan will be heading to space this week, and the southeast plays a huge role in the final product.  

Just weeks after Weyburn experienced a record-setting snowfall, another massive dose of precipitation is expected in the region over the next few days. 

Environment Canada is calling for upwards of 70 millimetres, or more, to fall on the Opportunity City by Sunday. 

"We're looking to amounts of 30-40 mills tonight and another 20-30 during the day tomorrow," explained Natalie Hasel, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. "We do have rain continuing on Friday night and Saturday before it finally clears later in the day Saturday, or the evening towards the nighttime."
