Could EV shift change gas prices?

The federal government is moving forward with plans to shift to battery-operated vehicles by 2035.

Canada's Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has unveiled more details regarding the shift earlier this week.

Patrick De Haan, the head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, said with the rapid change for automakers, it will be interesting to watch the price of gas leading up to that mandate and after.

Gas prices at a 2-year low in the southeast

Southeastern Saskatchewan is currently enjoying the lowest gas prices they've seen in two years.

Saskatchewan's average gas is sitting at $1.329 per litre with Estevan's average five to six cents higher.

Patrick De Haan, the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said the recent falling gasoline prices can be linked to multiple factors including oil prices declining for seven weeks straight, weaker gas demand, seasonality, and concerns about the economy.

Why is December so warm?

Traditionally the latter portion of the fall season for the southeast feels more like winter but that's been far from reality the last month and a half.

The average high for mid-December in the southeast is -7 C, with an average low of -19 C. The mercury this year continues to exceed the freezing point.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is projecting that trend to continue throughout the winter months with a strong El Niño forecast.

Canadian Taxpayers Federation disturbed by Saskatchewan's budget update

The Saskatchewan government provided a mid-year update on their budget yesterday that's now projecting a deficit.

Originally the province had projected a $1 billion surplus in its 2023-24 fiscal year, however, they're now forecasting a deficit of $250.5 million.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is condemning the province's fiscal update citing the lack of willingness to adjust spending is worrisome.

Why you received an alert for a Maple Creek drinking water advisory

The town of Maple Creek's province-wide alert sent out today regarding a drinking water advisory was unintended.

Phones located across Saskatchewan lit up at 1:10 p.m. with the notification that was only intended to be sent to town residents and a portion of southwestern Saskatchewan.

The cause for the alert was due to a large water main break on the 200 block of Maple Street at around 12:15 p.m. causing the community to be placed under a precautionary drinking water advisory until further notice.

What's the proper way to dispose of jack-o'-lanterns?

Many individuals will have unwanted pumpkins leftover with Halloween now over and the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is offering ways to dispose of the giant orange gourds.

The non-profit organization is urging jack-o'-lantern owners to use environmentally friendly routes instead of just dumping them in uninhabited areas.

"Well, it may sound like a green idea to just throw it into the woods, but you may unintentionally make wildlife sick, in addition to resulting in other people choosing to just dump debris there," NCC's Spokesperson Andrew Holland said.

Have you scanned your poppy?

A new website launched by the Royal Canadian Legion has turned poppies into a portal to learn more about Canadian soldiers.

Poppy campaigns started last Friday across southwestern Saskatchewan and now the red flower can be scanned on poppystories.ca to link individuals to fallen Canadian soldiers.

John Griffin, the public relations officer with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56, said the technological initiative could help bridge the gap between generations.
