A key meeting for Canada's canola industry takes place today in Saskatoon

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is meeting in Saskatoon today with Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald and Cody Blois, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, along with representatives from the canola sector. The focus: responding to China’s steep tariffs on Canadian canola products.

Last week, China announced a 75.8% tariff on Canadian canola seed, adding to the 100% tariffs placed in March on canola meal and oil. 

Saskatchewan Premier Moe, federal minister to meet on China canola tariff

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is set to meet today with federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald, along with industry groups, to discuss the steep Chinese tariff on Canadian canola seed. 

Kody Blois, the parliamentary secretary for Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison are also to attend the meeting in Saskatoon.

A press conference is scheduled following the discussion. 

Anand set to have meeting with Rubio in Washington amid bilateral tensions

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is set to have her first official meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington today amid ongoing tensions in the bilateral relationship.

Anand and Rubio have previously spoken by phone, including in June ahead of the G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis.

Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc cycled through Washington in July looking for a tariff offramp but instead U.S. President Donald Trump boosted duties on Canada to 35 per cent.

Road 7 West concrete box culvert in Rhineland must be replaced

It appears the work on repairing the concrete box culvert of Road 7 West in the Municipality of Rhineland will be more extensive than initially thought.

"The engineers were contemplating a minor repair on the wings of the concrete culvert," explained Reeve Don Wiebe who noted that work did get underway. "As our engineers proceeded with that repair they became aware the culverts are cracked, and have sufficiently deteriorated over the last two years, so they have advised us that the culverts should be replaced."

Dual sport athlete, 11-year-old Ace Graham, a star in the making

Ace Graham is a hockey player, as well as a baseball player, and the 11-year-old excels at both, but as he looks into the future, he's looking to build on his baseball career and also be named Sports Illustrated Youth Athlete of the Year.

Starting with hockey, Graham says he got involved because of a family member. "My dad just signed me up, and I just started playing."

While he likes hockey, the 11-year-old star says he is leaning toward baseball. "Two years ago, I liked hockey better, but now I like baseball more."

Grassroots effort aims to create new Morden park

A new park is on the horizon for the city of Morden in the Manchester and Dublin area.  

Mayor Nancy Penner said the idea was raised by a community member who contacted the city via email. 

“Being in a very densely populated area of the city and having a large number of families living there with young children, [she] was concerned about where the kids were going to play,” she said.

Next month, the Pembina Valley Humane Society will harness the spirit of friendly competition to raise funds for the region’s furry friends.

According to Caitlin Parr, the organization’s fundraising chair, the humane society has partnered with Rendezvous Brewery and Taproom for the event.

The Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT) Open House for the Network and Systems Administrator Program was the public's first look at the newly renovated learning space in Boundary Trails Place, for the new program aimed at filling a need for IT professionals in the area.
