Physiological Leaf Spot is showing up in Southern Alberta

Physiological Leaf Spot is suspected in a number of winter wheat fields in Southern Alberta.

Physiological leaf spot (PLS) appears as round or oval lesions that may be yellow or bleached white to gray in color. Lesions may also have a dark center with a narrow chlorotic (yellow) halos and tend to be more numerous toward the tip of the leaf blade. PLS lesions are often found in the upper canopy, and missing or rare on lower leaves.

Family says Canadian dentist was aboard Air India flight that crashed after takeoff

The Canadian citizen believed to be on an Air India flight that crashed shortly after takeoff is a dentist from Mississauga, Ont., her family has confirmed.

The husband of Nirali Sureshkumar Patel said she was on board the London-bound flight that crashed Thursday, killing at least 240 people.

Patel's dental clinic referred The Canadian Press to the husband, who said that he was in the process of booking travel to India for himself and the couple's one-year-old child.

Protests at G7 summit in Alberta set to be largely peaceful, targeting Trump policies

Protests during the upcoming G7 leaders summit in Kananaskis, Alta., may be starkly different than demonstrations happening this week against immigration crackdowns in the United States.

A University of Toronto research group that has been monitoring the meetings of world leaders since 1998 says its analysis shows Canadian protests are more peaceful and smaller.

Tuesday evening the Legends Car Club presented a cheque for $31,155 to South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR). The money was raised through its annual Drive For Cancer and fundraising BBQ and Car Show. 

Club member and BBQ organizer Don Bergen, who was part of the presentation, noted the May 31st BBQ at Hometown Ford in Winkler brought in the most money it ever has.

Local teens lead the way: W.C. Miller's YiP group funds six community initiatives

A handful of local organizations have the support of W.C. Miller's Youth in Philanthropy (YiP) group, which doled out its annual grants earlier this week. 
    
Through student-created fundraisers, and with the Altona Community Foundation matching those dollars, the group at Altona's high school was able to distribute $3,400.

Whips off to hot start in the Border Baseball League

It's been a strong start to the season for the Winkler Whips as they've gotten off to a 5-2 start and player TJ Matuszewski believes things will keep going up from here.

"It's been a lot of fun," Matuszewski says about the early season success. "We started off a little slow, a couple of rain delays, we maybe didn't get as many wins early as we would have liked, but we're starting to come around. It's been a lot of fun, bit of a different group but it's been nice to get know some of the guys that haven't been here in the past."
