MB Hydro planned power outage for Schanzenfeld, Hochfeld, and Schoenweise
Roughly 1,250 Manitoba Hydro customers south of Winkler will be without power today, as crews carry out planned maintenance work.
The outage will affect the communities of Schanzenfeld, Hochfeld, and Schoenweise, and is scheduled to run from approximately 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Rain washes out Sunday's Goldeyes game
Sunday afternoon’s American Association game at Blue Cross Park between the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Chicago Dogs was cancelled due to rain and unplayable field conditions.
As this was the final scheduled game between the two clubs this season, it will not be made up.
Tickets to Sunday’s game may be exchanged at the Blue Cross Park Ticket Office for those of equal value to any remaining 2025 Goldeyes home game.
U.S. politics threaten to complicate Canada’s co-hosting of 2026 World Cup
With less than a year to go until the 2026 World Cup, political tensions and U.S. policy threaten to pose problems as Canada, the United States and Mexico prepare to co-host the tournament.
Next year’s FIFA World Cup will be the biggest ever, with the three countries hosting a record 48 teams. Between June 11 and July 19, they will play 104 matches, most of them in the U.S.
Bank of Canada expected to hold key rate again
Avery Shenfeld doesn't think the Bank of Canada will cut its benchmark interest rate at its decision on Wednesday, but if it does, he said it will be a "pleasant surprise."
"There's always a chance that they'll surprise with the rate cut," the chief economist of CIBC said.
Most economists are also expecting the Bank of Canada will hold its policy rate steady at 2.75 per cent for a third consecutive decision later this week.
The Supreme Court of Canada has given the thumbs down to hearing an appeal in the thumbs up grain contracting case
The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed a request to hear an appeal from Achter Land and Cattle regarding an earlier court decision that found a thumbs-up emoji served as an agreement to a grain contract. South West Terminal launched a claim for damages after Achter Land and Cattle failed to deliver on the contract.
Man arrested after Morden police called to a home disturbance
Morden police arrested a 20-year-old man after officers were called to a home one Saturday morning earlier this month.
When they got there, officers found a woman, who had made the call to police, locked in the bathroom because of an argument with another occupant of the home.
Police did a further search and found the young man, who they say had a no contact order with the woman.
He was arrested for failing to comply with an undertaking condition and release.
An October court date has been set.
Driver ticketed over $2,000 after police find unmarked tobacco
A 40-year-old man was arrested after a July 14th traffic stop in Morden
During the stop, police say an officer spotted a pack of unmarked tobacco in the vehicle. From there, a search was conducted and that's when officers found controlled substances on the driver.
He was arrested and is set to appear in court in October.
The driver was also ticketed for Possessing Not Manitoba Marked Tobacco which carries a fine of $2,542.
Denare Beach Teen Challenge picking up pieces after wildfires destroyed everything
The Adult and Teen Challenge men's addiction recovery program up north is holding onto their faith as they look to rebuild after the devastation of the wildfires.
"It's very devastating," says Allen Lagore, the Flin Flon Regional Director with Adult and Teen Challenge of Central Canada. "When you first get back to your community and realize that 218 homes have been lost in our community, you see the effects on everybody's lives. It rips your heart out."
MPI reminds Manitobans to replace peeling license plates
Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is reminding motorists to replace their license plates if the letters or numbers are peeling.
Tara Seel is Media and Public Relations Lead. She says once the numbers or the reflective coating begins to peel off plates, they create safety concerns for all road users, including law enforcement.
"Traffic stops are dangerous in and of themselves," notes Seel. "They now have to approach a vehicle when they are not able to read that license plate and have a little bit of information to go in with."
Wirth proud of groups efforts at track event in Edmonton
A group of track athletes and their coach went to Edmonton for a special event, and all involved came away proud of the efforts, as well as a greater understanding of what it will take to find that next level.
"It was good, it was good, it was a long, long trip," coach Al Wirth says with a chuckle. "15 hours on a bus, so it was a long trip. But, the kids worked hard and competed well. We didn't get any medals, which is unfortunate, but we did get some top eight finishes, which is nice."
