Year in Review: Ukrainian newcomers receive gracious support from local services and residents

With 2022 drawing to a close, Discover Moose Jaw will be sharing some of the biggest stories that were viewed by you in 2022. This story was first published August 8, 2022.

Two hundred and thirty Ukrainians landed in Regina in early July. They came to Canada to escape the Russian war on Ukraine.  

Many of those Ukrainians came to Moose Jaw to resettle and rebuild their lives.  

According to the Moose Jaw Multicultural Council (MJMC), dozens of Ukrainians have arrived in the city and are using their services.  

Saskatchewan RCMP encouraging drivers to postpone travel plans

Saskatchewan RCMP say that recent freezing rain and snow continue to impact road conditions across much of the province. Winter conditions exist on highways surrounding Moose Jaw, with icy/slippery sections and drifting snow.

From noon on December 27 to 11 a.m. on December 28, Saskatchewan RCMP’s Operational Communication Centre received 59 reports of motor vehicle collisions and 37 non-collision weather-related reports, such as traffic hazards and vehicles in the ditch.

Travel not recommended on highways surrounding Moose Jaw

Motorists are being advised to stay off the highways as an Alberta Clipper moves into the region.

As of 12:00 am (Dec 25), Saskatchewan's Highway Hotline is not recommending travel on highways surrounding Moose Jaw including Highway 1, Highway 2, and Highway 363.

Visibility is zero, with swirling snow, loose snow, snow drifts, and drifting snow.

Alberta Clipper expected to hit Saskatchewan; Special weather statement issued

Environment and Climate Change Canada says an Alberta Clipper will move into Saskatchewan Saturday night bringing a swath of mixed precipitation and strong winds to the southwest corner of the province.

Ice pellets and freezing rain are the primary hazards with this system beginning this evening and transitioning into light snow by Sunday morning.

Along with the mixed precipitation, southerly winds on tonight will shift to strong northwesterly by Sunday morning. There could be some gusts up to 70-80 km/h and possibly higher near the Cypress Hills.

Apartment fire deemed accidental

Moose Jaw Firefighters have left the scene of the fire at the Empire Apartments building which started early this morning.

Firefighters were called to the building, located at the corner of Caribou Street and 4th Ave NW, shortly after 4 am.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Russell provided an update just before 4 pm.

Case involving suspect in October shooting adjourned until the new year

The man accused of attempted murder, after allegedly shooting at police back in October, made another court appearance in Moose Jaw Provincial Court on Monday.

The case involving 32-year-old Jirard Saddleback of Calgary has been adjourned until the new year.

Saddleback was remanded by consent and will stay in custody until the next court date of January 10, 2023.

RCMP detachments in south-central Saskatchewan note steady increase in reports of property crime

Since mid-November, RCMP detachments in south-central Saskatchewan have noted a steady increase in reports of property crime, including break-and-enters and thefts. A number of items have been reported as stolen in these incidents, including vehicles, firearms, tools and electronics. I

Investigation has determined these crimes may be committed by suspects armed with weapons. Investigators are working to determine if they are connected.
