Swift Current Fire Department reflects on exciting Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week takes place nationwide every October, and each year, the Swift Current Fire Department (SCFD) team finds unique ways to spread awareness throughout the community. This typically includes demonstrations and presentations at K-8 schools, but this year, they took it a step further.

Partnering with MacMor Industries and Domino’s Pizza, the SCFD made some special deliveries across town during Fire Prevention Week, October 6th to 12th.

Giving back to the community, one delicious coffee at a time!

“Coffee is for us is a lifestyle. There's no child born, there is no wedding, there is no graduation – even there is no funeral – without a coffee ceremony.”

Yonas Gebre was born and raised on a coffee farm in Ethiopia’s Sidamo region, considered to be the birthplace of the beverage.

“Every morning, my mom used to roast the coffee for my dad, and that sound was my alarm clock,” he laughs. “Every morning she roasted, she ground, she brought in the clay pot, and she served my dad with that little cup. It is amazing. It is beautiful. It is our ritual.”

Bags for all kinds of travel: UNpacking with U.N. Luggage

The seasons are changing, and so are the travel plans of Manitobans who are perhaps looking for a change of scenery.

When planning your destination, you also need to plan your luggage, and what kind of luggage you bring can make or break your trip.

The folks at U.N. Luggage know that struggle all too well, and that’s why they carry a range of versatile bags for any weather, as well as bags that can handle all weather.

Special occasions for family, friends and work welcomed at Steinbach’s Smitty’s

Smitty’s in Steinbach specializes in celebrating some of life’s important moments. From children’s birthday parties, to weddings and anniversaries, workplace functions, family get-togethers and memorial services, the restaurant continues to serve as a welcoming space for Southeast residents wishing to mark their special events.

“You serve these people for 20 years,” reflects Myranda Wyndels. “Their children have birthdays and you watch them grow up. You get to see them experience a lot of things.”

Kroeker Farms community presence visible across the Pembina Valley

You’ve seen them in parades this past summer, at the Harvest Festival, and at the Corn and Apple Festival, giving out their high-quality potatoes.

“We gave out about 6,000 pounds of potatoes just in Winkler alone,” notes Christian James, Director of the Kimberly Packing Plant.

“Kimberly is a division of Kroeker Farms that handles the crops after harvest.” This includes the washing, grading, and size profiling of potatoes to ensure the best quality product is packed and shipped. “This is where we guarantee 100% quality to the customer” explains James.

QuickBooks expert helps Southeast’s small businesses streamline their finances

He may be a software whiz, but for Matt Wieler it’s still all about the people – and their businesses.

“Coming from a banking background, I really enjoyed that moment where I could hit the ‘approved’ button and watch the joy in someone’s face,” says Wieler, now the owner-operator of Steinbach-based Books in Balance. “I’d be in the numbers, in the credit scores, and doing all the math. But it was wonderful watching a human’s light switch go on. They’d go from maybe not having a house to having a house, and it would be life-changing.”
