Province hosting town hall discussing increasing respiratory illnesses in children

Manitoba's chief public health officer will take part in a telephone town hall tonight to answer parents' questions as the number of children with respiratory viruses climbs.

Dr. Brent Roussin says health officials will also stress the need for preventive action such as getting flu shots and washing hands.

Roussin says the province is being hit by three viruses at once: COVID-19, the seasonal flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Prime Minister says Monday will be federal holiday to mark Queen's state funeral

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Sept. 19 will be a federal holiday to mourn Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her state funeral in London.

"Declaring an opportunity for Canadians to mourn on Monday is going to be important," Trudeau said at a caucus retreat in New Brunswick Tuesday.

He also said his government will be working with provinces and territories to ensure they're "aligned."

Saskatoon woman who had been reported missing facing charges

Saskatoon police say a woman who had been reported missing is facing charges in the United States related to unauthorized use of identification and in Canada related to parental abduction and public mischief.  

Dawn Walker had been reported missing along with her seven−year−old son before they were found safe in Oregon last week.

Deputy Chief Randy Huisman with the Saskatoon Police Service says Walker remains in custody in the United States, where she is to appear in court on felony and misdemeanor charges related to false identification.

Canada's 2003 world hockey junior team also accused of group sexual assault

Hockey Canada says members of its 2003 men's world junior hockey championship team are being investigated for a group sexual assault.

The national sports organization says it learned of the alleged incident on Thursday evening after being contacted by a reporter seeking comment on the alleged assault.

Hockey Canada says it has immediately contacted Halifax Regional Police about the allegations because Halifax was the co-host city of the 2003 world junior hockey championship.

Manitoba teen charged with second-degree murder after pedestrian killed

Manitoba Mounties say a 15-year-old girl has been charged with second-degree murder after two people were hit by a vehicle in Powerview-Pine Falls.

RCMP said a 27-year-old woman and 20-year-old man were walking on a trail Friday when they were hit by a vehicle.

The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries but the man died at the scene.

Mounties allege the collision was intentional.

The teen is also charged with assault with a weapon.
