MCGA looking for farmer input on the proposed Bunge-Viterra merger
Manitoba Canola Growers Association is encouraging producers to take part in their survey regarding the potential merger of Bunge and Viterra.
The MCGA notes they have been actively engaged with the Competition Bureau raising member concerns about the potential merger and the fact that it would substantially lessen competition among buyers and crushers.
They note as a result it would put limitations on farmer's choices and would potentially impact price competitiveness.
The Competition Bureau is still seeking input from farmers on the merger
Prairie cattle marketing highlights
The latest report from Manitoba shows feeder steer prices dropped off with the biggest drop of $14.83 per cwt being recorded for the 901 plus pound steers for an average price of $276.83 per cwt.
Feeder heifers also saw a drop in prices for most weight categories... other than the 401 to 500-pound girls which saw a price increase of $4.21 per cwt for an average price of $360.32 per cwt.
Slaughter cows saw an increase with the average price for D1-D2 's coming in at $130.50 per cwt.
Canada's horticulture sector gets a boost
Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced a $9.8 million partnership with the Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada (FVGC).
The funding is coming through the AgriScience Program's Clusters Component, a program under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.
MacAulay says agriculture creates jobs and a sense of pride in communities right across Canada.
Prairie producers dealing with Avian Influenza again
Fall migration has once again brought the issue of avian influenza back to the prairies.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed the presence of H5N1 (the highly pathogenic avian influenza) on ten premises across Western Canada.
According to the government website eight operations in Alberta, one in British Columbia, and one in Saskatchewan have reported avian influenza.
Producers are encouraged to practice enhanced biosecurity procedures as outlined through their provincial requirements.

The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA) will deliver live cattle chain of custody tracking for the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef's (CRSB) Certified Sustainable Beef Framework.
After reviewing the program operation for the last two years the CRSB is confident thCt working with the CCIA will enable consistent implementation of its Chain of Custody Requirements and improve transparency of live-cattle movement across all CRSB Certified Supply chains.

CN reports strong grain shipments for Week 9
CN Rail is reporting grain movement is starting to pick up across the prairies.
CN's assistant vice-president of grain David Przednowek says rail car demand has ramped up over the last few weeks.
"We shipped almost 700,000 tons of grain and processed grain products last week , 685. So we've seen that tonnage steadily increase here over the past number of weeks. Week 6 was just under 600,000 tons and we've seen those numbers grow. So week 9 has definitely been the biggest week so far to date this crop year."
