AGT Foods launches Food Bank Crop Exchange Program

A new partnership will help farmers support local food banks across Saskatchewan and Western Canada. 

AGT Foods is working with Food Banks Canada and Drive Away Hunger.

President and CEO Murad Al Katib launched the AGT Food Bank Crop Exchange Program this morning in Regina. 

He says through the program  producers can donate a portion of their crop delivery at their local AGT Foods location, to support local food banks across Saskatchewan and Western Canada. 

Producers simply commit to an amount and "Round Down" their delivery .

FCC and AGTECH ACCELERATOR announce funding partnership for agriculture startups

More opportunities are opening up for agriculture-related start-up companies to access funding.

Farm Credit Canada (FCC) is working with Saskatchewan-based AGTECH ACCELERATOR, a venture-backed accelerator program founded by Cultivator powered by Conexus, Emmertech, and Economic Development Regina (EDR).

Through AGTECH ACCELERATOR startup companies can access the capital and mentorship they need in order to bring to market the systems, machines, and data that producers are looking for as they advance their own operations.

Canada Beef names Eric Bienvenue as Incoming President


Canada Beef and the Canadian Beef Check-off Agency have selected their next President.

Eric Bienvenue will join the team as the incoming President effective Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

He has nearly 30 years of experience in senior leadership roles in the Canadian pork and poultry industries.

Bienvenue served as President and CEO of Boire et Frères Inc., Canada’s largest hatchery company and among its biggest chicken producers.

Farmers are making good progress with the harvest despite some scattered showers

This week's crop report from Manitoba Agriculture shows 64 per cent of the provincial crop is now off despite some scattered showers last week.

Precipitation was varied with rainfall totals ranging from 0 mm to 16.5 mm.

Most of the rain fell in the Southwest with Alexander receiving the most precipitation.

Dennis Lange puts together the weekly report and says other than delaying harvest activities the rain doesn't seem to be impacting crop quality with most crops in fair to mostly good condition.

Farmers invited to submit nominations for Alberta Grains Board of Directors

Alberta Grains is putting out a call for farmer nominations for their new Board of Directors.

They are looking for two directors from each of the six growing regions in the province.

Interim Chair, Tara Sawyer says farmers of all operation sizes and backgrounds are encouraged to apply. 

"All it takes to be a director is a good head on your shoulders, and a willingness to speak up and strive for positive change, no matter how steep the roadblocks."

Friday is the deadline for SaskCanola's Learn to Lead Course

A key challenge for farm groups and organizations can be trying to find individuals interested in participating at the board level, the "Learn to Lead" course is designed to help producers feel more comfortable in board roles.

SaskCanola is hosting this year's Learn to Lead course from November 22nd to 24th at the Alt Hotel in Saskatoon.

SaskCanola's communications manager Ellen Grueter says the personal and professional development program is aimed at building leadership capacity and creating future leaders in Saskatchewan's agriculture industry.

Railway interswitching trial begins

Ottawa's 18-month extended interswitching trial for the railways begins today.

Interswitching involves a shipper negotiating the transfer of a product between two rail companies, with one railway taking it part of the way, and then transferring it to a competing railway to take it the rest of the way.

SCA district meetings begin


The Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association holds its first district meeting tonight in Eastend.

CEO Grant McLellan is encouraging producers to take part as it gives producers an opportunity to find out what's happening within the organization and the beef industry.

He notes the drought is expected to be a key part of the discussions this year, adding they'll review the government programs that are available for producers.

The Keystone Agricultural Producers are encouraging producers to make sure their local candidates and party leaders understand the priorities for agriculture.

President Jill Verwey says the 2023 provincial election is critical.
