Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says Canada's new Arctic ambassador will play a key role in preserving sovereignty in the region as the military closely watches the movements of a Chinese icebreaker.

Iqaluit resident Virginia Mearns will be Canada's senior Arctic official on the world stage, following a career with local Inuit governments.

"Canada's Arctic ambassador is going to advance Canada's polar interests in multilateral forums," Anand told The Canadian Press in an interview from Inuvik, N.W.T.

On July 19, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate a fatal shooting by a Grande Prairie RCMP officers that happened earlier that day.

On July 18 at 10:36 p.m., a community peace officer in a marked vehicle had his emergency equipment activated while attempting to pull over an unrelated vehicle. The officer observed another vehicle being driven erratically, speeding away and running a red light. The officer broadcast this information on the radio channel shared with Grande Prairie RCMP.

Please be advised that Range Road 63 is closed from Highway 43 to Township Road 724 due to construction.

The full closure is in effect until tomorrow at 7:00am.

The Clairmont Centre for Recycling and Waste Management will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, July 29 until 8:00am on Wednesday, July 30 due to construction on Range Road 63. 

During the full closures, access will be granted to residents and business employees located along the affected route. The route will be closed to all other traffic.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area when travelling.
