Three new program intakes for Winter 2026 at NWP

Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP) is expanding its career-focused programming with three new pathways for students to embark on during the Winter 2026 semester.

Along with the addition of a brand new one-year Information Technology Specialist certificate, NWP is moving up the launch of the previously announced Graphic Design diploma and opening a second intake of the in-demand Social Work diploma.

Developed in response to labour market demand and student interest, these additions will broaden opportunities for learners seeking to build impactful, future-ready careers.

City continuing FireSmart activities to help protect the Bear Creek Corridor from wildfires

The City of Grande Prairie has been selected as a 2025 recipient of funding through Intact’s Municipal Climate Resiliency Grant, providing $130,000 to support vegetation management and protect against wildfires.

The City’s project focuses on the continuation of FireSmart activities within the forest area along the Bear Creek Corridor. The project has an estimated completion date of January 31, 2027 and includes up to 16.64 hectares of area earmarked for the removal of dead and down woody debris.

New road construction project on Township Road 724 starts tomorrow

Construction on Township Road 724 between Range Road 63 and Highway 2, is set to start Wednesday September 17, 2025.  

  • The work involves paving overlay and line painting.
  • Speed will be reduced in the construction zone.
  • Traffic may be reduced to a single alternating lane, be temporarily detoured or have rough non-gravel driving surfaces.
  • Obey all signs and flag persons, exercise extreme caution, and allow extra travel time. 

The project is expected to be completed late November, weather dependent.

Day-long manhunt ends with arrest of wanted man in Taylor

A day-long manhunt for a Fort St John man with warrants resulted in additional charges after an early-afternoon arrest near Peace Island Park in Taylor, BC.

On September 11, 2025, at approximately 9:55 am the Fort St John Street Enforcement Team (SET), Peace-Liard Police Dog Services (PDS), the North District Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Fort St John RCMP Frontline members executed a Feeney Warrant at a residence in Fort St John with the assistance of a Tactical Armoured Vehicle.

17-year-old Grande Cache resident faces charges for aggravated assault

On Sept. 6, 2025, around 3:10 a.m., Grande Cache RCMP responded to reports of a man who had just been assaulted by several people, possibly up to 4, near Grande Cache Community High Schol. EMS was on scene and tended to the victim while he spoke to police, stating they had stolen from him and identifying one suspect. The victim was then transported by EMS to the hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries. One suspect was later located and arrested, though RCMP are still trying to identify the other suspects.

Inflation ticks higher to 1.9% in August, short of economists’ expectations

Some stubbornness at the gas pumps pushed the headline inflation rate a couple ticks higher to 1.9 per cent in August, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

Gasoline prices rose 1.4 per cent month-over-month in August as higher refining margins offset lower crude costs, StatCan said.

The price of gas was still down 12.7 per cent annually in August – the end of the consumer carbon price has deflated costs for motorists since the spring – but the decline fell short of July’s 16.1 per cent drop, pushing the headline inflation rate higher.

Mennonite Disaster Service appoints Reynold Friesen as next executive director

Mennonite Disaster Service has appointed a new executive director.

MDS announced Monday that Reynold Friesen, the current director of alumni, church, and donor relations at Canadian Mennonite University, will enter this new role early next year.

Friesen will replace Ross Penner, who has held the position for over a decade and will retire in March 2026.

"I’m excited to be part of an organization which has a practical approach to living out faith," said Friesen.

Immigration lawyer, critics raise concerns about citizenship marker on Alberta ID

Critics are questioning what problem the Alberta government's move to add mandatory citizenship markers to provincial identification aims to solve, and say it opens the door to potential privacy breaches and discrimination.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said Monday the move is all about streamlining services and preventing election fraud. 

Alberta takes teachers' union to labour board over accusations of false claims

Alberta's government says it has filed a complaint with the Labour Relations Board against the union representing the province's 51,000 teachers.

Finance Minister Nate Horner says the complaint is connected with a document the Alberta Teachers’ Association distributed after setting a strike date of Oct. 6. last week.

The government says the document consisted of false claims, including that Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA) does not have the mandate to negotiate class complexity, class size, and supports for students.
