'Uniquely Canadian': Stampede begins with parade led by country star Shania Twain

The Old West will be on full display as thousands clad in tassels, boots and buckles march through city streets today to kick off the Calgary Stampede.

Country superstar Shania Twain will saddle up and lead the parade on horseback before performing Saturday at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Stampede runs until July 13.

The “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” singer, who was raised in Timmins, Ont., last took the stage at the Stampede in 2014.

Wildfire prompts second evacuation of Lynn Lake in northern Manitoba

The 600 residents of Lynn Lake in northern Manitoba are being told to leave town for the second time this year due to wildfires.

Town officials say a fire is threatening Manitoba Hydro transmission lines and, if those lines are damaged, the community could be without power for a month.

The town is offering transportation for evacuees and a reception centre has been set up in Brandon, about 1,100 kilometres by road to the south.

Staples in Winnipeg's music scene and beyond offered condolences and tributes Thursday after learning the bassist in a beloved band died in a highway crash with two others.

Indie pop band Royal Canoe, on social media, said Brendan Berg died in the crash Tuesday, a day before his 43rd birthday, along with his partner, Olivia Michalczuk.

Berg's death has left an "enormous and sudden hole in the lives of everyone who knew him," the post said.

Police search for suspect after string of assaults near HSC

The Winnipeg Police Service is working to identify a suspect in four similar sexual assaults that occurred on the evening of July 2.

Several reports were received about women who had been assaulted by an unknown male near the Health Science Campus.

At approximately 7 p.m., a teenage girl was walking in the area of Elgin/Sherbrook and was confronted by an unknown male who assaulted her. She reported to an adult and was transported to safety.

Third person dies after highway crash that killed Manitoba musician

A third person has died following a highway crash that killed the bassist for a well-known Winnipeg band.

Mounties responded to the crash Tuesday afternoon north of Swan River in western Manitoba.

They say a vehicle travelling south had crossed the centre line and hit a vehicle facing north that was parked on the edge of the road.

A 42-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman in the parked vehicle were transported to hospital, where they died.

Motorcyclist dead following collision on Pembina Wednesday night

A motorcycle collision has left a 29-year-old dead.

Shortly after 7 p.m. on July 2, a motorcycle travelling southbound on Pembina Highway collided with an SUV exiting a parking lot in the 1300 block on the west side of Pembina.

The 29-year-old motorcycle driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries. The SUV driver did remain on the scene and met with police. 

Southbound Pembina was closed for several hours following the collision and Traffic Collision Investigators are continuing this investigation.

Canadian airports returning to normal operations after early morning bomb threats

Airports were returning to normal operations Thursday after Canada's air traffic control service said some received bomb threats early in the morning.

Nav Canada said the early morning threats affected airports in Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver.

RCMP in Richmond, B.C., said they received a report of a threat at the Vancouver airport's Nav Canada control tower around 2 a.m. local time. The tower was evacuated and no threats were found after a search, the force said in a press release.

Rosanna Deerchild receives Indigenous Voices Award for 'She Falls Again'

The main character in She Falls Again is attempting to survive as an Indigenous woman in Winnipeg – a sadly-complicated task. She talks to the Sky Woman, who challenges her to reclaim her matriarchal power. 

She Falls Again is the latest example of cultural storytelling done by Winnipeg poet, writer and broadcaster Rosanna Deerchild. The unique blend of poetry and prose was recently recognized as one of the winners of the 2025 Indigenous Voices Awards.
