Mayor Genung provides first reaction to new cabinet

There are a lot of familiar faces in key positions in Danielle Smith's new cabinet, and that could be good news for Cochrane.

Mayor Jeff Genung was watching as the events unfolded this morning.

"It's good to see some familiar faces and we're excited about building strong relationships with the new ministers," says Mayor Genung.

The town continues to foster relationships with ministers to make sure they are aware of Cochrane's needs.

Melillo to follow-up with Elections Canada on voting issues

Kenora MP Eric Melillo is continuing to look into why 1,600 voters in northwestern Ontario weren’t able to cast their vote in the 2021 Federal Election.

On November 3, Elections Canada apologized to 1,600 eligible voters in Poplar Hill First Nation, Pikangikum First Nation and Cat Lake First Nation, saying ‘confusion’ between their staff and the three communities led to them not hosting polling stations on the night of September 22.

Elections Canada says ‘confusion’ between their staff and three First Nation communities in the Kenora area lead to 1,600 community members not being able to vote on the night of the 2021 federal election.

On September 22, Senator hopeful for northwestern Ontario, Tania Cameron, reported that members of Pikangikum First Nation, Cat Lake First Nation and Poplar Hill First Nation were not able to vote as all three communities did not host polling stations – representing 1,600 eligible voters.

64% voter turnout in Grande Prairie-Mackenzie riding for Federal Election

The 44th federal election on September 20, 2021 saw approximately 17,209,000 Canadians cast their ballot with a voter turnout rate of about 62.5%.  

In the Grande Prairie-Mackenzie riding, 53,455 ballots were cast among the 82,950 eligible voters.  

Conservative Party of Canada candidate Chris Warkentin had 68.4 per cent of the votes for a total of 36,361 votes to earn his sixth term in Ottawa.
