With hot weather and heavy traffic expected over the Labour Day long weekend, Alberta RCMP are reminding motorists and boaters to make safety a priority.

Police say officers issued nearly 1,100 tickets during last year’s Labour Day weekend, including 990 for speeding, 35 for distracted driving, and 55 for not wearing a seatbelt. Ninety-two impaired drivers were also removed from the road.

Farmers are working on bringing in the harvest as the weather cooperates.

Last week's hot, dry weather also brought its share of thunderstorm activity with strong winds and hail which caused some lodging in crops. The Nipawin area had the most rainfall, with 42 mm, followed by the North Battleford and Consul areas with 30 mm and 28 mm, respectively. A number of other areas around the province are also seeing some scattered showers.

The four-month-old kittens, Sunset and Dusk, are adorable voids with coats that aren’t quite solid black, faint grey tabby stripes shine through, giving them a unique, almost exotic look.

Dusk, a neutered male, is the bold one of the pair. He loves to explore and play but still enjoys slowing down and cuddling up for a nap. Sunset is the independent sibling and takes a little longer to warm up, but once she does, she’s happy to snuggle in close.

Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson has announced an increase in the lending limit on the Feeder Associations Loan Guarantee Program (FALGP).

Locally owned feeder associations utilize the program for low-interest financing backed by a government guarantee. Through the program feeder associations help livestock producers get financing to buy animals and grow their herds.

Producer, Dustin Lamb says the program played a huge part in his decision to return to the family farm and will be instrumental in keeping it going.

Rosetown RCMP say they responded to a number of calls ranging from suspicious activity to driving complaints during the week of Aug. 22 to 28.

On Aug. 22, police investigated a report of suspicious activity at a local business. RCMP say no signs of criminal activity were found. That same day, officers also responded to a 911 call from a residence in Rosetown. It was determined not to be an emergency.

Later in the week, RCMP dealt with several driving complaints on Highway 7. Police say some of the vehicles were located and drivers were issued warnings.

A man from Tramping Lake stood trial in Kindersley provincial court this week, arguing the RCMP violated his Charter rights during his arrest.

Curtis Skinner, 43, represented himself at the Aug. 26 trial after making a plea of not guilty to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired operation, and refusal to comply with a breath demand.

The charges stem from an incident on Aug. 30, 2024, in Kerrobert.

A line of powerful storms that ripped through Alberta and Saskatchewan on Aug. 20 caused widespread wind and hail damage, including at least one confirmed tornado, according to the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP).

Based on witness accounts, ground surveys and satellite analysis, the NTP has confirmed several distinct events as the long-lived supercell system tracked more than 400 kilometres across the Prairies.

Wilkie RCMP say a 20-year-old man from the community is facing an impaired driving charge following a recent traffic stop.

Police also reported a series of other calls, including fraud complaints, one of which remains under investigation, along with reports of property damage and theft where there was insufficient evidence to proceed.

Officers executed an outstanding warrant after locating an individual reported lying on the side of the highway, and also investigated an abandoned vehicle later determined to have been stolen in North Battleford.
