Eatonia’s newest race is nuts, bolts, and a whole lot of fun

Eatonia Heritage Park will host Valve Cover Racing during their Show & Shine on June 21st from 10 AM to 4 PM. This new event will feature small cars that are made from the valve covers of real cars, with 4 wheels racing down an inclined track. Racers are encouraged to build their cars, however, a limited number of pre-built cars will be supplied at the event. 

Emergency crews respond to fire at Kindersley motel

KINDERSLEY, Sask. — Firefighters, RCMP and EMS are responding to a structure fire at the Centennial Motel in Kindersley shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Smoke was seen coming from the west end of the building as crews arrived. The motel was safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, as well as the extent of the damage.

Police assist with busy weekend in Biggar

The Town of Biggar was a busy place this past weekend.

Taking place alongside a toe-tapping good time in the community was a slo-pitch tournament, and Sunday mini-marathon from the local elementary school, and the local RCMP were happy to report the day went off without a hitch. 

"Saturday was busy with lots of traffic in town for the old-time polka dance, while others braved the winds for a ball tournament. It appeared everyone enjoyed their visit to Biggar with no police related issues to report."

Smell of smoke prompts air quality warning

A quick whiff outside on Tuesday morning can confirm that smoky conditions have rolled back into the West Central region.

Multiple alerts via Environment and Climate Change Canada this morning are sharing a high priority air quality warning for a large part of the region. Widespread smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility according to the weather service, creating hazardous conditions for everyone regardless of age.

Manitoba raises over $400,000 ahead of Saskatchewan Day of Caring Radiothon

The Saskatchewan Day of Caring Radiothon, raising funds for the Canadian Red Cross, is coming up on Thursday.

In Manitoba, their Day of Caring event just finished and raised an incredible $419,000+, that amount including the donations matched by both the Federal and Provincial governments. Now this week it's Saskatchewan's turn to raise funds & awareness to support families displaced by provincial wildfires, the money once again being government matched in support of Red Cross and the 2025 Saskatchewan Wildfires Appeal.

River Ridge Golf Club swings into future with plans for new $400K clubhouse

LEADER, SK — River Ridge Golf Club is teeing off on a new chapter.

The scenic course located between Eatonia and Leader has announced plans to construct a brand-new clubhouse, with demolition of the existing mobile-home facility set for Sept. 1. Groundbreaking on the new build will follow immediately after.

The project comes with a $400,000 price tag, with financing already secured through Sandhills Credit Union in Leader. However, club officials say support from the wider community will be essential to help bring the vision to life.

GST relief on new homes could save 1st-time buyers up to $240 on mortgages: report

The Liberal plan to give first-time homebuyers a tax break on a newly built home could have substantial impacts on housing affordability — with a few caveats — a new analysis finds.

The Liberal government introduced legislation on June 5 to eliminate the GST portion from new home sales of up to $1 million for first-time buyers, which works out to as much as $50,000 off the cost of a new build or a substantially renovated unit.

For homes sold above $1 million, the GST relief is phased out as the price tag nears $1.5 million.

Canada Post rejects union terms for arbitration as both sides enter bitter stalemate

A government push to steer Canada Post and the union representing 55,000 mail workers toward common ground hit a big pothole Monday.

As an increasingly acrimonious impasse drags on, Canada Post rejected a framework put forward by the union for a binding arbitration process, which Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu asked the parties to work toward just five days earlier.
