Kindersley rallies behind more than 275 wildfire evacuees, with donations, meals and warm hearts

Kindersley, Sask. – As wildfires continue to rage across northern Saskatchewan, the Town of Kindersley has opened its doors and hearts to more than 275 evacuees, welcoming families in crisis with generosity, compassion and a firm Prairie handshake.

Dozens of displaced residents are now calling hotels in Kindersley their temporary home, including 80 Filipino evacuees staying at the Kindersley Inn. On Wednesday, volunteers from The Kitchen Corner served warm Filipino meals to those families, bringing a taste of home and a message of hope.

Limited rainfall noted again with local seeding virtually complete

Seeding is virtually complete around the west-central region. At 99 per cent done as of June 2, the progress represents a 5 per cent jump from last week, and a two per cent rise when considering the five-year average. 

Individually, nearly every crop is reporting at least 96 per cent. Soybeans (75) and perennial forage (82) were the only ones with considerable progress left to go.

Kyle RCMP investigate multiple break-ins and traffic complaints

KYLE, Sask. — Kyle RCMP responded to several calls over the past week, including break and enter reports and traffic concerns, while investigations remain ongoing.

On May 29, officers attended a disturbance of the peace call in Rosetown and later investigated a no-injury traffic collision near Wiseton on Highway 44. On June 2, RCMP were called to two break and enter incidents — one at a property in the Rural Municipality of Mountain View and another at a residence in Kyle. Both files remain under active investigation.

The lack of moisture is becoming more of a concern in Alberta

Canada has unveiled its priorities for the G7 leaders' summit just one week before it gets underway in Alberta as the government defends its decision to invite India to the summit.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's office says Ottawa's top priority for the summit will be strengthening global peace and security, which includes countering foreign interference and transnational crime, as well as improving responses to wildfires.

Lloydminster RCMP make several arrests following high-risk warrants

Several people were arrested in Lloydminster this week following a significant police operation tied to the execution of high-risk warrants, RCMP say.

According to RCMP there was an ongoing investigation within Lloydminster that involved assistance from Alberta RCMP’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Services (PDS).

Mounties say specialized units were deployed to ensure public and officer safety. Several individuals were taken into custody without incident.

Unemployment in Saskatchewan lowest in nation at 4.2%

Saskatchewan added 15,300 full-time jobs in May, continuing a trend of strong employment growth and maintaining the lowest unemployment rate in the country, according to new figures released by Statistics Canada.

The province’s unemployment rate stood at 4.2 per cent last month, the lowest in the nation and well below the national average of 7.0 per cent.
