With the province ringing in Fraud Prevention Month at the beginning of March, they're highlighting a type of investment fraud known as "pig butchering scams".

They report that in 2024, over $3.4 million was lost due to these scams.

The province defines a "pig butchering" scam as a type of long-term investment fraud where scammers build trust with the victims over time, often through social media or messaging apps. This can include befriending the victim, developing an online romance with them, or pretending to be a legitimate investment advisor.

Former prime minister Stephen Harper is taking shots at Liberal leadership front-runner Mark Carney's economic record days before the party gathers to choose its next leader.

In his bid to win the Liberal leadership, Carney has campaigned on his economic record as governor of both the Bank of Canada and later the Bank of England.

His campaign website says Carney "guided Canada through one of the most turbulent economic periods in modern history, protecting jobs and helping ensure that Canada came out stronger."

U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that 25 per cent across-the-board tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, with a lower 10 per cent levy on Canadian energy, will start Tuesday, tipping the continent into a trade war.

"No room left for Mexico or for Canada (to make a deal)," Trump said at the White House.

Trump's executive order to implement economywide tariffs was delayed until Tuesday after Canada and Mexico agreed to introduce new security measures at the border.

The family of Alvin Hugh Turnbull sadly announces his passing in Estevan, Sask. on February 27, 2025 at the age of 68.

In honour of Alvin, a Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul's United Church on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 at 2:00 p.m., with Bill Mann officiating. Interment will follow at Souris Valley Memorial Gardens, after which a luncheon will be held in the church auditorium.

Estevan Fire Rescue crews responded to multiple calls over the past week, including two structure fires, a carbon monoxide alarm, and a motor vehicle collision.

On Feb. 24, Estevan Fire Rescue responded to commercial fire alarms on the north side of the city. Crews spoke to the building manager and determined the cause of the alarm. The scene was turned over to management, and crews returned to service.

Later that day, EFR responded to a two-vehicle collision. Once on scene, crews assisted other agencies before returning to the station.

Estevan police responded to multiple incidents over the weekend, including arrests for assault and failing to comply with release conditions, a stolen bicycle, and reports of threats and harassment.

On Feb. 28, officers were called to the southeast area of the city for a report of a male burning items in a backyard and causing a disturbance. Members spoke with the man, who was found to be burning cardboard in a fire pit. He was advised of the bylaw and warned to keep the noise down.

Telemiracle 49 wrapped up in Saskatoon over the weekend, enjoying support from across the province including the southeast.

In total that raised $5,709,306, running for 20 straight hours from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 p.m. Sunday and just running shy of beating Telemiracle 48's total.

The $12,037 raised for Estevan had some good assistance, says Kinettes Telemiracle Rep Krissy Wallman.

The Estevan Extreme Volleyball Club's 15UW team had a great weekend, coming out from a tournament with a championship win.

They were at the Surge Showdown in Weyburn on the weekend, competing against eight other teams for the top spot.

Their first games in pool play had the team in a dominant position, going undefeated with wins over Regina Aces (25-16, 25-16), Regina QCVC Royal White (25-20, 25-17), and host team Weyburn Surge (25-22, 25-17).

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is headed back to Ottawa after ending his London visit with an audience with King Charles.

Trudeau was in London for a weekend security summit — making Canada the only non-European nation represented in talks on how to ensure a possible Ukraine ceasefire actually holds.

Analysts say Trudeau's visit was meant to maintain Canada's role in the transatlantic alliance as U.S. President Donald Trump pulls back from NATO and blames Ukraine for Russia's invasion.
