Blunden backs Bruins in Highway 39 Rivalry showdown

The Highway 39 Rivalry Cup between the Estevan Bruins and the Weyburn Red Wings will continue this weekend, but Estevan Police Chief Jamie Blunden doesn’t believe it will be decided just yet.

"I don’t think it’s going to be decided this weekend because I don’t believe the Red Wings are going to win the two games they think they're going to win," Blunden said. "If the Bruins are successful in winning those, it’s going to continue on."

Radville ER to be closed for weekend

The emergency room at the Radville Marian Health Centre will be closed for the weekend, according to an alert issued by the town office. The closure will take effect at 8 a.m. Friday and go until 8 a.m. Monday. The reason for the closure was cited as a physician shortage. The closure is the fourth due to a physician shortage since the beginning of the year.

Carman Gould of Stoughton, Sask. passed away at the Arcola Health Centre, Arcola, Sask. on January 18, 2025 at the age of 82.

In keeping with his wishes, Carman's loved ones will remember him privately, without the proceedings of a formal service. Interment will take place at the Heward Cemetery, Heward, Sask. at a later date.

The Wake will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2025 at the White Bear Community Hall, White Bear First Nations, Sask. The Traditional Feast will commence at 12:00 noon on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at the same location, followed by the Funeral Service. Cremation will then take place.

Southeast set to battle blowing snow with Environment Canada sending out advisory

The southeast is seeing a blowing snow advisory close out the week with conditions set to deteriorate through the day.

With centimetres of snow in the forecast and whipping winds coming, the area will see a drop in visibility that's set to hamper motorists.

Minot, ND mayor concerned with 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports, says tourism could be impacted

"Minot is without our friends from the north. We love that traffic [and] it's important for the vitality of our community. So, it does concern me."

Minot, North Dakota is a short 2-hour trip south of Estevan. Both communities see cross-border traffic year-round, with residents travelling to either city regularly. With the looming threat from the Trump administration of a possible 25% tariff on Canadian imports to the United States, Mayor Tom Ross is concerned that it could impact Minot. 

Liberal ministers make last-ditch pitch in D.C. to stop Trump tariffs on Canada

A trio of federal cabinet ministers is in Washington today making a last-ditch attempt to stop U.S. President Donald Trump from imposing economically devastating tariffs on Canadian imports.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly, Public Safety Minister David McGuinty and Immigration Minister Marc Miller are all in the U.S. capital, making a final diplomatic push to convince Republican lawmakers and Trump's team to sway the president.

Trump has signalled he's prepared to slap 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports as early as Saturday.

Jaime Battiste drops out of running for Liberal leadership

Nova Scotia Liberal MP Jaime Battiste says he is dropping out of the Liberal party leadership race and backing former central banker Mark Carney.

The MP for Sydney—Victoria made the announcement in a statement sent out late Thursday by his campaign.

Battiste was the only Indigenous candidate in the running and sought to put First Nations issues on the agenda during the contest.

He says the best way for him to advance the issues he cares about — reconciliation, the environment and affordability — is by supporting Carney’s leadership bid.

Moosomin Rangers set for quarterfinal battle against KW Oil Kings

The Big Six quarterfinals are set to heat up this week, with the defending champion Moosomin Rangers taking on the KW Oil Kings in one of the most anticipated matchups.

Rangers head coach Ferrel Horn said his team is ready for the challenge.

“We’re not totally healthy, but we’ve been struggling with that all season,” he said. “But we’re good in our roster, and we are a pretty deep roster, so we should make out OK.”
