Oilers fight to the end in tough loss to Weyburn Falcons

The U14 Estevan Oilers’ hopes of reaching the league finals were dashed by the Weyburn Falcons, who claimed a 20-7 victory in a hard-fought matchup. Despite the loss, the resilient Oilers fought until the final whistle, scoring in the last minute of the game to avoid a shutout.

The Falcons opened the scoring early with a seven-point lead and extended it to 20-0 heading into the final minutes. The Oilers managed to get on the scoreboard in the last 45 seconds, pushing hard to score seven points.

CBSA gives details on gun, alcohol, and cigarette seizure at north portal

Canada Border Services Agency made a big stop at North Portal earlier this week with officers finding multiple undeclared items leading to a penalty.

In a social media post, the CBSA showed off the full group of seized items from the stop, including:

  • 2 undeclared loaded pistols
  • a prohibited rifle
  • ammunition
  • alcohol
  • cigarettes

In total the traveller paid $2,000 in penalty costs.

British Columbia's redrawn political landscape won't be settled for about a week, with manual recounts triggered in two key ridings after a nail-biting provincial election that has yet to produce a clear winner.

Elections BC said Sunday the recounts will take place from Oct. 26 to 28 in Juan de Fuca-Malahat and Surrey City Centre, where NDP candidates lead B.C. Conservatives by fewer than 100 votes.

There was no clear winner in Saturday's British Columbia election, but the leader of the B.C. Conservatives says the province's political landscape has "changed forever," after his party pushed the incumbent New Democrats to the brink.

Neither party won enough seats to claim a majority, and vote counting was set to continue Sunday, with Premier David Eby's NDP in striking range of a minority government if he gets the co-operation of the Greens, who won two seats.

Potential recounts mean it could be next week before the winner is decided.

Colts off to Tier II Championship after beating Estevan

The Swift Current Comp. Colts will have a shot at a third straight SHSAA 5A South Rural Football League Tier 2 Championship after a convincing win over the Estevan Elecs on Saturday afternoon.

Colts quarterback Owen Sletten went 8-for-20 throwing for three touchdowns and 189 yards while rushing for an additional touchdown in Swift Current's 39-12 semifinal victory over the Elecs at Colts Field. Receiver Nate Siemens had two touchdown catches combining for 73 yards on the two receptions and running back Jake Woods rushed for 196 yards on 19 carries.

The Warm Welcome Kitchen is back in full swing this season, offering meals and fellowship to those in need. Operating every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at St. Giles Anglican Church, the kitchen has become a hub for local residents to come together, share a meal, and stretch their grocery budgets a little further.

Donna McGillicky, kitchen coordinator for the Warm Welcome Kitchen, said the program is designed to support the community.

“People come in for the fellowship. We have seniors that come and they get together and visit,” she said.

This week, the students talked about volunteering at the United Way Telethon this weekend, reminding the grade 12's about their unofficial transcripts, and an incredible opportunity to check out the University of Alberta! Plus, the SRC checked in and updated everyone on how the group has been this year so far. They're taking over the United Way Telethon from midnight to 6:00 a.m. so that the adults can take the night off for their hard work.
