Oil conference brings optimism for industry with provincial announcements
A recent oil conference held in Saskatchewan saw plenty of industry interest as the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference drew out exhibits and people in the oil industry from across the country and the world. The event in Regina lasted from April 28th to the 30th, with appearances from industry professionals and Premier Scott Moe also showing up.
Estevan Mayor Tony Sernick took the time to head to the event and said it was much more oil-focused this year.
Carney says he won't make a pact with NDP, confirms King Charles to launch Parliament
King Charles will visit Ottawa to deliver the speech from the throne at the end of this month in a show of support for Canadian sovereignty, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday.
The news came in his first press conference since leading the Liberals to a fourth straight mandate in Monday's election, where he laid out the priorities for his first few months, promising to "embark on the biggest transformation of our economy since the end of the Second World War."
Three quarters of Canadians say misinformation affected the federal election: poll
More than three quarters of Canadians believe misinformation had an impact on the outcome of the federal election, a new poll suggests.
The Leger poll, which sampled more than 1,500 Canadian adults from April 29 to May 1, suggests that 19 per cent of people think false information or misinformation had a major impact on the election.
Almost a third (32 per cent) said it had a moderate impact, while 26 per cent said it had a minor impact on the election's outcome.
Only nine per cent of Canadians said misinformation had no impact on the election at all.
Southeast stays mostly clear of CAA's worst road list of 2025
CAA's worst roads of Saskatchewan have come in, and for the first time in a while, most of the southeast is off the list.
The CAA's worst roads list includes those with potholes or crumbling pavement, cracks, general disrepair, poor signage, congestion, and unsafe infrastructure.
Last year, Moosomin's Highway 8 took the top spot, with potholes all along the road causing problems.
This year, the Southeast is mostly off the list, with the exception of Weyburn's Highway 35, which came tied for tenth place.
Excellence in leadership, innovation and community service honoured at Women of Distinction Awards
Female leaders from across the region were celebrated today at the Southeast Women of Distinction Awards in Estevan, recognizing exceptional achievements and contributions in community service, innovation, leadership and inclusion.
This year’s annual event featured a mix of urban and rural nominees from throughout southeast Saskatchewan. For the first time, the nominations committee made the decision to limit the number of finalists to keep categories manageable.

Liberals lose one seat in Quebec after validation process
The federal riding of Terrebonne in Quebec has gone from the Liberals' win column back to the Bloc Québécois after a postelection vote validation process.
Bloc candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné, who had represented the riding since 2021, said in a social media post that she came out with a lead of 44 votes and that a judicial recount will take place.
"For someone to be officially elected, you have to wait until the end of this process," Sinclair-Desgagné wrote in French. "I hope to have the honour of representing Terrebonne again in the coming years."
Sellers unlikely to get above asking price in Estevan even as housing sales speed up
The housing market in Estevan is still chugging along, with the first quarter of 2025 actually hosting some impressive results. That's according to RE/MAX Branch Manager Linda Mack, who says her data shows strong growth in house sales.
"I did look at the first quarter of the year, and we are definitely up in sales. It's been the busiest quarter I've had in ten years, so when I looked at Estevan and about a half-hour radius around the city, I would say we were up about 30% in sales."
First weekend of May shaping up to be warm welcome for summer weather
After rain and snow have been on the forecast for April in the southeast, the first weekend of May is now shaping up to be very summer-like. Temperatures will be soaring up to the near 30-degree mark, and the sun will be shining over a couple of days.

Alberta MP to step aside to allow Pierre Poilievre to run for seat in Parliament
Conservative MP Damien Kurek is set to step aside to allow Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run in a byelection in the Battle River—Crowfoot riding in Alberta.
Kurek says he is "temporarily" stepping aside as MP for the riding, which he has held since 2019.
The Conservative party confirms that Poilievre will run in the Battle River—Crowfoot byelection once it's called.
