Strathmore church selling antiques and collectables for charity

The Strathmore United Church is gearing up for its annual Vintage & Treasures Sale this weekend.

On Friday and Saturday there will be a variety of collectables for sale, including ornaments, china, antiques, jewelry, crystal, and more.

"We're using the whole basement of our church for the sale," said Arlene Wahl, a member with the church. "The donations are made by parishioners and anybody in town. A lot of seniors are downsizing."

Canaryseed sector expects more acres this year

Statistics Canada is forecasting 232,180 acres, a 20 per cent decrease from last year, but traders question the estimate’s accuracy

Canaryseed brokers and traders think acres this year will be larger than Statistics Canada is indicating.

“Definitely acres are going up, not down,” said David Nobbs, a trader with Bornhorst Seeds.

Statistics Canada is forecasting 232,180 acres of the crop, a 20 per cent decrease from last year.

“I don’t even know why they’re involved in this crop. The numbers that come out are just always wrong,” said Nobbs.

Duplex fire in Chestermere "under investigation"

The City of Chestermere has given an update on the fire that happened at a duplex on West Lakeview Point just after 9 p.m. on Sunday, April 20.

According to the city, Chestermere Fire Services were assisted by fire crews from Rocky View County and Strathmore to put out the blaze. 

"Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident," wrote the city in a news release. "Firefighters were also able to locate a cat and remove it safely from the home."

"We live in Chestermere and we're moving to Crowsnest Pass this summer. My husband got a job in Sparwood. So, we've decided to relocate so we can all be together," explained Tamara, mother of Evie.

The calendar may say Spring, but some areas of the Prairies are seeing snow

The occasional spring snowfall is not unusual for Western Canada, bringing additional moisture prior to seeding.

Parts of southern Alberta including areas around Calgary, Olds, Airdrie, Beiseker and Three Hills received another blast of winter over the weekend, with more snow overnight making travel challenging.

Meteorologist Drew Lerner with World Weather Inc says a significant snowstorm is going to continue to occur in the southeast part of Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba today with some other areas seeing some light snow or rain.

Strathmore teaching residents the basics of pickleball

The Town of Strathmore is hosting an event to help residents get into pickleball.

The event takes place at the Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre on April 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and features instructor Sheila McLeod.

"We do have racquets. Just wear indoor athletic shoes, have water, and be ready to move," wrote the town on its website.

Although tickets for the event cost $20, those with a monthly or annual membership at the Sports Centre can register for free.

The event is for adults 18 and over.

Alberta's request to question fired health executive over confidential emails granted

A judge has granted Alberta's government its request to question the former head of the provincial health authority about confidential emails she is accused of keeping and sharing without permission, including to media.

The government's request was made last month when it filed for an injunction in the high-profile lawsuit launched by Athana Mentzelopoulos, the former chief executive of Alberta Health Services.

Poilievre vows not to impose a home equity tax as Liberals, NDP talk health care

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is claiming the Liberals will impose a tax on Canadians' home equity if they're re-elected as the federal election campaign enters its final week.

The last day of advance voting in the general election saw federal leaders scattered across the country, pitching plans on homebuilding and health care.

Poilievre was in Toronto Monday afternoon speaking to an audience with CARP, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons. He was asked whether he would put any taxes on equity saved in Canadians' homes.
