Three workers, one from Manitoba, emerge from B.C. mine after 'meticulously executed' rescue

Three workers who were trapped in a remote northern British Columbia mine have been rescued after more than 60 hours underground.

Red Chris mine operator Newmont Corp. said the three men were safely bought to the surface at about 10:40 p.m. on Thursday.

It said Kevin Coumbs, Darien Maduke and Jesse Chubaty — contractors for B.C.-based Hy-Tech Drilling — were in good health and spirits after being trapped underground by two rockfalls on Tuesday morning.

"This was a carefully planned and meticulously executed rescue plan," the company said in a statement.

Agriculture Disaster declarations being reported across the Prairies

The month of July has brought cool, wet weather and smoke from forest fires to the majority of the Prairies.

Rain has been reported in some of the drier areas, but its coming too late for drought stressed crops and forage, with RM's across Manitoba, and Saskatchewan and  Alberta County's now declaring agricultural disaster areas.

New MOU focuses on collaboration in agriculture

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Circle for Indigenous Agriculture & Food.

The agreement is designed to build stronger collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous agricultural producers.

Alberta announces $10 million to land conservation programs

The provincial government recently announced two conservation programs: the Private Land Conservation Program and Ecosystems Grant Program 

The government of Alberta is investing $10 million to improve private land conservation, with the launch of two new and improved programs.

The enhanced Private Land Conservation Program and the new Ecosystems Grant Program will enable better protection of natural areas across the province, while allowing landowners to use their land for farming and ranching, the province has said.

Strathmore cat sanctuary warns residents of cheque scam

Happy Cat Sanctuary Society of Alberta is warning Strathmore residents about a recent cheque scam.

According to a social media post, the society received fraudulent donation cheques in an attempt to commit cheque fraud.

"These look somewhat legitimate but are fake," wrote the group on social media. "It started with an email telling us we were going to receive a donation of a certain amount from the estate of a woman who had passed away."

Real Canadian Wrestling prepares to hit the stage at the Strathmore Stampede

One unique addition to this year's Strathmore Stampede is the inclusion of Real Canadian Wrestling (RCW).

The local wrestling group, led by Strathmore resident Steve Wilde, will be performing Stampede Smackdown at the Strathmore Family Centre gold arena on Aug. 3.

"It's going to be a different level of wrestling at the show," said Wilde. "I won't say it's going to an uncensored event, but there is going to be a heightened level of wrestling and different types of matches."

Strathmore sushi shop closes during move

Strathmore's local sushi shop, Happy Burp, is getting a new home.

Since opening, the store has been located alongside Bubble Tea Brewers just off Highway 1 on the west side of town.

However, a social media post shows that Happy Burp will be moving to 80A Archie Klaiber Trail, next to Stacked Pancake House.

"We will be closing temporarily starting [Friday] in preparation for our new location," wrote Happy Burp on social media. "We will announce our soft opening once everything is ready."

A definitive soft opening date was not given.

AgraCity restarts packaging and product fulfillment operations

 AgraCity - a generic crop input supplier - sending out an important notice yesterday to its clients thanking them for their patience while they work through their operational restructuring after experiencing cash flow problems.

AgraCity owes product to a number of farmers and is attempting to reimburse growers for crop inputs they bought but did not receive.

The company announced they have restarted their packaging and product fulfillment operations and will be making products available to customers soon.
