‘Our lives are going to change forever’: Calgary couple wins $1 million
A Calgary couple is celebrating after winning $1 million.
Michelle and Alan Hill won the money in a Lotto Max draw on Tuesday (July 23).
The couple bought the ticket from 7-Eleven at 166 Crowfoot Way NW in Calgary.
“I was at work at my desk when I finally checked an older ticket,” Alan said. “I scanned it at my desk, and I had my buddy at work double-check because I thought I was doing it wrong.”
“I checked it on the app, probably a lot,” he chuckled. “I couldn’t believe it.”
Alberta to introduce policing committees for rural areas
The Alberta government has announced that the province will create municipal and regional policing committees.
According to the province, the Police Amendment Act was passed in 2022 and will ensure municipalities have a role in province-wide policing priorities.
Strathmore gearing up to celebrate Alberta Culture Days
Strathmore Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) are gearing up to host its Alberta Culture Days festival this weekend.
The town will celebrate the event on Saturday (Sept. 28) with food vendors, live music, and other activities in Kinsmen Park. The event runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Police seize more than $500,000 in drugs and cash in Calgary
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams seized more than half a million dollars in drugs, and cash after searching two Calgary homes.
According to a news release, five handguns were also taken.
Twenty-eight-year-old Huan Cao is facing multiple drug and weapons charges.
The organized crime team with ALERT says they searched the two homes in August with help from the Calgary Police Service and RCMP.

Square dancing has been a hot spot for Strathmore residents for years.
Over the summer, the event took place at the Pavillion at Kinsmen Park, and Claudia Littlefair, organizer of the program says many new people were able to attend.
"We had probably between 15 to 35 people during the summer came out, so lots of new people were able to try it out."
It's the last time you can get in for free as you will have to make a $35 donation going forward.
Liberals launch pandemic preparedness agency, seeking faster vaccine development
The federal Liberals are creating a new agency to beef up Canada's ability to handle rapidly spreading infectious diseases and protect from future pandemics.
Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the agency is meant to preserve the "top-gun team" of public servants that helped steer Canadians through COVID-19.
Health Emergency Readiness Canada is being tasked with boosting Canada's life-sciences sector and ensuring Canadians get faster access to vaccines, medical therapies and diagnostics by accelerating the transition from research to commercialization.
Strathmore Spartans senior girls' volleyball undefeated in Drumheller tournament
The Strathmore Spartans senior girls' volleyball team had a star-studded start to the season.
In a tournament hosted at Drumheller Valley Secondary School, the Spartans secured gold, defeating all six of their opponents throughout the weekend.
"After losing the final the previous weekend at the Camrose tournament, these girls were going to stop at nothing to take home gold this weekend," wrote the Spartans in a release.
Strathmore Soccer Association looking to bulk up boys and girls teams
The Strathmore Soccer Association is looking for young players interested in joining their teams.
Registration has been open since September 18, with the group looking for players born between 2013 and 2015 to round out their roster.
Cooler temperatures bring relief to Wheatland County
Wheatland County lifted its fire advisory on Tuesday.
According to the county, the decision was made due to cooler temperatures in the area.
"Please note that a fire ban may be reinstated if conditions change or deteriorate," says the county in a Facebook post.
The Town of Strathmore also removed its fire restrictions on Monday (Sept. 23).
Strathmore looking for input on new design of Maplewood Drive
The Town of Strathmore has released a public survey about the future design of Maplewood Drive.
According to the town's website, aging trees were removed along the street in May to prepare for infrastructure work in 2025.
