Strathmore school lockdown tied to "Senior Assassin" game

The lockdown at Strathmore High School on Friday, May 23, was caused by a recent viral game.

Just before noon, police responded to reports of a suspect with a gun at the school. Due to the seriousness of the report, police initiated a lockdown at the school and surrounding buildings.

"RCMP arrived at the scene and quickly located the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident," wrote police.

There is a hold and secure lockdown at Strathmore High School.

According to Staff Sergeant Mark Wielgosz with Strathmore RCMP, officers are responding to determine the situation and investigate the matter.

"In the meantime, we are asking people to avoid the area until the matter can be fully investigated and resolved," said Wielgosz.

An update will be provided once more information becomes available.

Here's a timeline for the 2025 Municipal Election in Strathmore:

The campaign period began on October 31, 2024, with candidates being able to submit a Notice of Intent to Run.

The nomination period started on January 1, with Claude Brown being the only nominated candidate as of May 22.

The election advertising period kicked off on May 1, which is followed by election signs going up on August 21.

Nomination Day is on September 22, with nominations closing at noon.

Canada Post union calls for halt to overtime as deadline passes with no agreement

The union representing about 55,000 Canada Post employees has called for a countrywide halt to overtime work, saying its negotiators will continue to review the latest contract offers from the mail carrier.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said late Thursday that members were being told to refuse any work beyond eight hours in a day and 40 hours in a week. 

Over $194 Million in Funding Secured for University of Saskatchewan’s Veterinary College

The University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) has secured over $194 million in funding, to be delivered over the next five years. This renewed interprovincial funding commitment from Manitoba, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan has been in place for over 60 years.

Through the agreement, WCVM provides essential veterinary medicine programming, research, and clinical services to meet the needs of each province. Saskatchewan and Manitoba each have 25 student seats, while British Columbia funds 40 seats.

Chestermere art guild celebrates local talent through annual art exhibit

Artists with the Chestermere Fine Art Guild will be displaying their creative pieces at the Chestermere Rec Centre on Saturday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.   

“People express themselves through many different kinds of creative activities, and visual arts is one of them,” said Cathy Luby, president of the Fine Art Guild.

A Strathmore junior high class was nominated as Classroom of the Month!

On Thursday, May 22, the 104.5 More Country and StrathmoreNow crew visited George Freeman School to congratulate Jillian Terry’s class.  

“Just a neat opportunity to share with the kids and recognize kids, especially junior high kids. They don’t always get that recognition. So, it’s kind of fun for them. They are very pumped,” said Terry, reflecting on the nomination. 

Meals On The Farm delivery four: Hilton Ventures

The crew at 104.5 More Country visited Hilton Ventures to thank them for all their hard work.

Spencer Hilton, a farmer with Hilton Farmers, explained to StrathmoreNow what a good season looks like.

"I guess what makes a good season for us in terms of what we are hoping for, is good moisture right to the surface, because then we can seed shallow and get the seed in the ground."

The farm is seeding canola, wheat, and barley.

Hitlon has spent nearly half his life in farming and still loves it.
