Weyburn Red Wings

It would take a shootout, but the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings got back into the win column Friday night, as they opened a trip to North Battleford with a 5-4 win over the North Stars. Jerome Marahaj, Lucas Schmid, and Ethan Dekay had a goal and an assist each in the win, with Dekay getting the game-winner in the shootout. Meanwhile, Angelo Zol stopped 41 of the 45 shots he faced to earn the victory between the pipes. 

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings took to the ice for the first time in 14 days Saturday night, after three of the games in that span were postponed – one due to weather and two due to ice plant issues at Crescent Point Place. They travelled to Estevan for the first time this season, looking to improve the season record to 2-0 against their Highway 39 rivals.  

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will have to wait a little longer before playing in front of their fans at Crescent Point Place. Issues with the ice plant at the arenas in Weyburn have prompted the team to reschedule their game on Friday night against the Humboldt Broncos to Monday night. 

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings dropped their second game in a row to the Battlefords North Stars Saturday night. The Battleofrds would score two goals in the third period to pull away for a 4-3 victory.

The loss, coupled with a Melfort Mustangs win, moved the Red Wings to second in the SJHL, but they still hold a three-point lead over the Estevan Bruins for first place in the Viterra Division.

For the first time since October 4th, the Richardson Pioneer found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard at the end of regulation Friday night, as they fell 4-3 to the visiting Battlefords North Stars at Crescent Point Place. 

"Lots of guys started off moving their feet, and just weren't finding that puck luck, just weren't earning those puck battles and those puck races," said Red Wings assistant coach Willy Mason after the game. 

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings moved into first place overall in the SJHL Saturday night, and extended their point streak to 12 games, as they beat the Kindersley Klippers 3-2. The win also swept the weekend for the Wings, as they also won Friday night.

"We found a way," said defenseman Josh Karman. "I mean, at the end of the day, we didn't play our best at times, but we found a way to get a W both days."

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings extended their winning streak to three games and their points streak to 11 Friday night after they edged the Klippers 5-4 in Kindersley. The win moved the Wings back into first place in the Viterra Division and second overall in the SJHL. 

Kindersley would come out firing at the beginning of the game, taking advantage of a Weyburn squad that had bussed up during the day for the game. 

The strong play of the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings throughout October is getting recognition from not just around the province, but around the nation.  

Over the course of the past month, a member of the team has been named the league’s Most Valuable Player of the Week three times – Jerome Maharaj, Jaxson Ruthven, and Dazza Mitchell. As well, Max Chakrabarti has been named the defenseman of the week twice, and Angelo Zol the goaltender of the week twice.  

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings finished the month of October with just one loss in regulation, coming back on October 4th, after they skated to a 5-3 win over the Melfort Mustangs last night. The win gives the Red Wings points in 10 consecutive games, the only blemish on the streak coming in an overtime loss to the Humboldt Broncos Tuesday. 

Weyburn was led by Ethan Dekay and Jaxson Ruthven, who finished the game with a pair of goals each. Turner McIntyre would also get his first goal of the season in the win. 

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings extended their point streak to nine games Friday night, as they held off the Melville Millionaires for a 1-0 win. The victory bumps the Red Wings into third place in the SJHL, and they are tied with the Millionaires for the lead in the Viterra Division. 

The game could best be described as a goaltending showcase, with Weyburn goaltender Angelo Zol turning aside 34 shots for his first SJHL shutout. At the other end, Nick Genette would stop 33 of the 34 shots he saved en route to the win.
