Police lay impaired charges in collision that killed Fort Saskatchewan woman
A woman is facing impaired driving charges related to a collision that killed a Fort Saskatchewan woman.
Cochrane RCMP says the collision took place back in August on Highway 1A near Morley Road. 53-year-old Fort Saskatchewan resident Samantha Wylie was pronounced dead at the scene.
After an investigation, police have charged 29-year-old Deirdre Snow, a resident of Stoney Nakoda First Nation, with the following:
Report finds 40% of farm operators will retire by 2033
A recent report by RBC says that in 2033, 40% of Canadian farm operators will retire, placing agriculture on the cusp of one of the biggest labour and leadership transitions in the country’s history.
Over the same period, a shortfall of 24,000 general farm, nursery, and greenhouse workers are expected to emerge.
They also found that 66% of producers do not have a succession plan in place.
The report includes a three-point plan for growth, with goals set for the short, medium, and long term.
ASIRT: investigation into fatal Strathcona County police shooting ends
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has completed its investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Strathcona County.
On the morning of September 23, 2019, Strathcona County RCMP say they received a call from a woman saying that she was going to kill herself. The woman reportedly claimed to have been armed with a knife and a sword.
Two different RCMP units were sent to the address. As the officers approached the bottom of the woman's driveway, the woman allegedly exited her house while wielding a three-foot-long sword.
Alberta premier visits Sherwood Park to discuss public healthcare
Danielle Smith was in Sherwood Park on Tuesday (Apr. 11) morning.
The Alberta premier stood in front of cameras at the Synergy Wellness Centre as the leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP) for her first party event ahead of next month's provincial election.
Much of the talk around the event revolved around Smith and the UCP committing to Alberta's publicly funded healthcare system.
U15 AAA Rangers coach will return for third year
A familiar face will be sticking around the U15 AAA Fort Saskatchewan Rangers.
Last week the club announced that head coach Tyson Munro will remain the team's head coach heading into the 2023/24 hockey season.
Munroe has an extensive history of coaching at a high level and has a bachelor of kinesiology from the University of Alberta and majored in sports coaching.
Colin Mochrie Sherwood Park show delayed
It looks like Colin Mochrie won't be coming to Sherwood Park for a while.
Festival Place was meant to host Mochrie, famous for his role on 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?', in late March as part of his 'HYPROV' tour.
However, Festival Place announced that the show has been moved to mid-November.
Brett Fraser, the theatre supervisor, said it all came down to scheduling.
"Mochrie is doing some filming and taping for some broadcasts that will be going on over the summer," said Fraser. "So, he had to cancel multiple dates, including ours."
Sherwood Park counselling centre receives significant provincial donation
A Sherwood Park counselling centre has received a significant donation from the provincial government.
On Monday (Apr. 10) the government announced that they would be donating $166,570 to the Saffron Centre.
The centre is a Sherwood Park-based organization that offers counselling to people impacted by sexual violence.
Roxane Tiessen, executive director of the Saffron Centre, says that this donation will help with their increasing waitlist.
RCMP release identity, picture of officer killed in Strathcona County collision
The identity of the Strathcona County RCMP officer that died early Monday (Apr. 10) morning has been revealed.
Mounties confirmed that 32-year-old Constable Harvinder 'Harvey' Singh Dhami died in a vehicle collision while on his way to respond to a noise complaint.
The incident took place at around 2 a.m. at Township Road 540.
Farmers looking at quick melt as unseasonable warmth spreads across prairies
With many areas looking at above-20-degree temperatures, farmers will see any remaining snowpack leave soon.
That's the consensus among weather forecasting services, which are forecasting a strong westerly flow across the prairies.
Alberta has been the odd province out as it's had less snow to keep things cold compared to Saskatchewan or Manitoba, but that's set to equal out soon.

Strathcona County RCMP officer died while responding to noise complaint
Police have released more details on a fatal collision involving a Strathcona County RCMP officer.
Mounties confirmed that 32-year-old Constable Harvinder Singh Dhami died in a vehicle collision early Monday morning (Apr. 10).
In the statement, police say that Singh Dhami was responding to assist other officers in a noise complaint when his cruiser collided with a concrete barrier.
The incident took place at around 2 a.m.
