National leaders of all federal political parties took part in the first day of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture's AGM.
Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh from the NDP, the Green Party’s Elizabeth May, Yves-Francois Blanchet from the Bloc Quebecois and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre addressed CFA delegates.
Pierre Poilievre told delegates that the Trudeau government is increasing the cost of farm production.
Government adds indecency, abortion offences to list of 'unjust' historic convictions
People who have been convicted of a number of indecency and anti-abortion offences that are no longer on the books can now have those convictions expunged.
The list of "historically unjust offences" is being expanded to include a raft of charges that date back to 1892 and were largely directed at the LGBTQ community and women.
The government says police historically used certain indecency charges to target and raid bathhouses, LGBTQ nightclubs and swingers clubs.
Last-second heroics propel Ardrossan girls to championship
The Ardrossan senior girls' basketball team has had a season to remember.
After going undefeated throughout the regular season, the team took home the Metro Athletics division three championship on Saturday (Mar. 4).
Ardrossan met Austin O'Brien in the championship.
"It was a super exciting game," said Brandin St. Peter, the Ardrossan head coach. "It was back-and-forth right up to the final seconds."
Iconic 'Last of Us' props were made in Fort Saskatchewan
A local EFX artist had some of his work featured on the most recent episodes of the HBO show 'The Last of Us'.
Travis Shewchuk of Ravenous EFX was hard at work while the show was filming in Edmonton a few years ago, working on props to be featured in a few of the episodes.
While he had to keep his cards close to his chest while the episodes were still coming out. Shewchuk is free to discuss the work that has already been featured.
The first major piece of Shewchuk's work that hit TV screens occurred in episode six of the series.
Prime Minister talks agriculture with CFA delegates
Politics took center stage on Monday as the Canadian Federation of Agriculture kicked off their Annual General Meeting.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the group and took time for a question and answer session.
In his address to the group he referenced what he said is misinformation around the government's fertilizer emission reduction target.
Sherwood Park actor heading to the Oscars
A Sherwood Park actor will be among the brightest stars in Hollywood.
18-year-old Kate Hallett will be at the Oscars after starring as 'Autje' in the Oscar-nominated film 'Women Talking' directed by Sarah Polley.
The film, which also features Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, and Frances McDormand follows the story of a group of women in a Manitoba Mennonite colony living in Bolivia who have to grapple with the disturbing truth of some of the colony's men.
PGDC recommends new pulse varieties for registration
The Prairie Grain Development Committee held its annual meeting in Banff last week.
Committees evaluated potential new breeding variety lines and recommended the best of the best for registration.
This year the Pulse and Special Crops Committee recommended 16 new lentil lines, 13 pea lines, 5 faba bean and 5 dry bean lines for registration.
Dr. Glen Hawkins, a Senior Manager and Agronomist with DL Seeds, chairs that committee and says there's some great potential coming forward.
Fort Saskatchewan reveals new 10 minute fire response plan
The city of Fort Saskatchewan has revamped its fire response map.
As part of an effort to update the city's fire master plan, a new map has been revealed that shows the local fire department's 10-minute response capabilities.
"It's a map that shows the areas of the city which would include a response time from the fire department within 10 minutes," said Craig Thomas, the director of planning and development with the city.
Here’s mayor Katchur’s reasoning for voting against $5 million Veterans Way expansion
Mayor Gale Katchur has spoken out about the expansion proposed for Veterans Way.
Katchur was one of two members of city council who opposed the bylaw to borrow the $5 million it would take for the project. The other member was councillor Jibs Abitoye.
However, with the majority voting for the expansion, Katchur says it's likely a loan will be taken out.
"[Council] believes [the expansion is] necessary and required, so I'll be respectful of the vote," Katchur said.
RCMP: Sherwood Park woman used mace, robbed person in 'buy and sell' meet
A Sherwood Park woman is facing robbery charges.
In late February, Strathcona County RCMP say that they responded to a call regarding a robbery that happened in the parking lot of a grocery store on Baseline Road.
Police rushed to the scene where a victim informed them that they were attacked by a woman after organizing a transaction on a buy and sell website.
The suspect reportedly attacked the victim with bear mace before stealing the item and fleeing the scene.
