More Canadian content: Goldeyes trade for slugging first baseman Warkentin
The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced the acquisition and signing Thursday of Canadian first baseman Matthew Warkentin.
Warkentin was obtained from the Frontier League’s Ottawa Titans in exchange for a player to be named later.
The 28-year-old is a native of Windsor, Ontario and becomes the sixth Canadian on the Goldeyes’ roster, joining right-handed pitchers Landen Bourassa (Lethbridge, Alberta), Trevor Brigden (North York, Ontario), Tylor Jans (St. Albert, Alberta), Landon Leach (Toronto, Ontario) and Will Sierra (Montréal, Québec).
Youth soccer in Killarney welcome highest number of kids yet
It's setting up to be a very spring and summer season in Killarney and Recreation Director Mandy Alexander couldn't be more excited about all that is being offered, including the very popular sport of soccer.
Alexander says there's already a buzz in the air as they get closer to getting onto the pitch. "We have the highest number we've ever had," she says proudly. "We're in the range of 140 or so kids registered this year."
Flyers swept out of MJHL playoffs
There will be a new champion of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League as the defending Turnbull Cup champs, the Winkler Flyers, were ousted in a series sweep by the Northern Manitoba Blizzard, losing game four 2-1 in overtime.
It was a struggle to find offense throughout the series for Winkler and that continued into the first period of game four.
The Blizzard came out strong and both teams went back and forth, but neither could find the back of the net. Shots were listed as 10=5 for the Blizzard but it remained 0-0 heading into the first intermission.
Jets blank Stars as Hellebuyck sets franchise record with 45th win
It was another shutout for the Winnipeg Jets as they downed the Dallas Stars Thursday evening.
Connor Hellebuyck saved 25 shots, recording his 45th win of the season to set a franchise record. It was also his eighth shutout this season.
Kyle Connor scored two goals, while Morgan Barron and Nino Niederreiter both added one each.
The first goal came with just over a minute before the end of the first period. Niederreiter managed to get the goal in with assists from Josh Morrissey and Adam Lowry.

The Regina Pats have won the Western Hockey League's Prospects Draft Lottery. They'll pick first overall on Wednesday, May 7th.
The last time the Pats had the number one pick was in 2020 when they selected Connor Bedard.
The Moose Jaw Warriors will get the 18th overall pick, and they'll get the 2nd pick in the U.S. Priority Draft.

Steinbach's Driedger shines in first year with Assiniboine Cougars
It was a fantastic first year on the ice for Steinbach's Brooklyn Driedger of the Assiniboine Cougars, who claimed silver at the ACHA Division 2 College Hockey National Championship.
Reflecting on the year, Driedger is thrilled with how things went both on and off the ice. "It was awesome, I had the time of my life," she says beaming. "Playing with the Cougars was a lot of fun, it was a great group of girls and it was a really great experience."
Community support fuels Morden Eagles Female Soccer programs
The Morden Eagles Female Soccer programs are ready for another season and manager Tania Sigurdson is ready to get back out onto the pitch.
"Super pumped," Sigurdson says with excitement. "Very happy to see the fields so far are pretty dry, and hopefully that means we can get out a bit sooner. Currently, we are still running our winter training program indoors at the Winkler Meridian Exhibition Centre, so we're still quite busy with indoor training, but we're certainly excited to get back onto the pitch."
Rebels to select 7th overall at 2025 WHL Prospects Draft
The Red Deer Rebels will pick 7th overall in the opening round of the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft.
The 2025 WHL Prospects Draft Lottery was held Thursday evening. The Regina Pats won the lottery and will select first overall, followed by Edmonton (via Moose Jaw), Kelowna, Penticton, Everett (via Kamloops), Vancouver (via Wenatchee) and Red Deer.
Spring weather forces time-out on Estevan U15 softball tryouts
Mother Nature has thrown a curveball at Estevan’s U15 provincial softball team, forcing organizers to postpone tryouts originally scheduled for this Sunday.
Head coach Shawn Madsen said the decision was made following a meeting, with rain and potentially snow expected over the weekend.
