Alberta surpasses 300 measles cases as doctors warn of exponential increases
More than 300 people in Alberta have fallen ill from measles since March and a group of doctors are warning the virus could grow exponentially in the coming weeks.
The Alberta government is reporting 16 new measles cases to bring the province's total count to 313.
The rising number has prompted the association representing Alberta doctors to warn of an outbreak that could quickly reach the thousands.
Former Alberta premier David Hancock given new post as assistant justice
A former Alberta premier has a new job in the provincial courts.
The provincial government says David Hancock has been named assistant chief justice of the Alberta Court of Justice in the Edmonton Family and Youth Division.
Hancock, a long-time legislature member, served as interim premier and Progressive Conservative Party leader after the 2014 resignation of Alison Redford, later calling it the "best summer job that I've ever had."
Hancock retired from politics after Jim Prentice was named as leader and was appointed in 2017 as a provincial court judge.
Hockey players' sexual assault trial grapples with tech issues
The sexual assault trial of five former members of Canada's world junior hockey team grappled with technological issues Tuesday as prosecutors sought to show security footage from a bar where the complainant and some of the players were the night of the alleged incident.
Michael McLeod, Carter Hart, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dube and Callan Foote have all pleaded not guilty to sexual assault in connection with an encounter at a hotel room in London, Ont., in 2018.
McLeod has also pleaded not guilty to an additional charge of being a party to the offence of sexual assault.
Alberta reports 16 more cases of measles, bringing total to 74
Alberta is reporting 16 more cases of measles, bringing the provincial total to 74 since the beginning of March.
The government says the new cases were reported in Alberta's central and southern zones.
Nearly all cases are in school-aged children, with 18 cases being reported in children under the age of five.
The province says 64 of the total cases have passed the point where the highly contagious disease could be transmitted to others.

Business and political leaders in Canada say there will be pain if Donald Trump follows through on his pledge to impose a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods, but they note the hurt will happen in his country as well.
The president-elect posted to Truth Social on Monday he will sign an executive order imposing a 25 per cent tariff on all products coming in to the United States from Canada and Mexico.
He said the tariff will remain in place until both countries stop drugs, in particular fentanyl, and people from illegally crossing the borders.
Trudeau announces federal byelection in Elmwood-Transcona
A federal byelection will be held in September to fill a vacant seat in Manitoba, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Sunday.
Voters will go to the polls in the Elmwood — Transcona riding in Manitoba on Sept. 16.
The Manitoba riding was held by the New Democratic Party until MP Daniel Blaikie resigned in March to go work for the office of the province's Premier, Wab Kinew.
Blaikie had held the federal seat since the 2015 election.
'My job is not to be popular,' Trudeau says after pressed to ditch carbon price hike
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pushed back Wednesday on growing demands from premiers to dump the planned April 1 hike to the consumer carbon levy, saying leaders must tackle both affordability and climate change.

Five pro hockey players facing sex assault charges expected to plead not guilty
Five players from Canada's 2018 world junior hockey team are facing sexual assault charges, but so far, it appears as if only one player has surrendered to police.
Alex Formenton, who plays internationally, surrendered to police in London, Ontario, on Sunday. His lawyer confirmed that he has been charged in connection with the case, and said the player would plead not guilty.
West Kelowna evacuations triple, as City of Kelowna declares wildfire emergency
A state of emergency has been declared in the City of Kelowna, B.C., and thousands more West Kelowna residents have been ordered to leave their homes in the face of a fast-burning wildfire.
The "very active and unpredictable" McDougall Creek wildfire has now destroyed structures and put more than 2,400 West Kelowna properties under evacuation order, up from about 800 Thursday afternoon, after a frightening night that saw hills surrounding the Okanagan community ablaze.
Helicopter crashes in northwestern Alberta while fighting wildfire, killing pilot
A helicopter involved in firefighting operations has crashed in northwestern Alberta, killing a pilot.
Todd Loewen, Alberta's forestry minister, offered condolences to the pilot's family, friends and colleagues on Thursday.
"Today’s tragic news is a reminder that the heroes who put their lives on the line to protect us are men and women like you and me. They have families, friends, hopes and dreams," he said in a written statement.
