Front counter wait times expected to increase at Red Deer RCMP detachment starting next week

Be prepared to spend extra time waiting at the downtown Red Deer RCMP detachment front counter starting Monday, as the customer service counter will be under construction.

Additionally, there may be reduced parking availability and extra noise at the detachment.

To alleviate wait times, Red Deerians are reminded of a number of common detachment services that can be completed online or by phone.

ASIRT seeking witnesses of fatal police-involved shooting in Wetaskiwin

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is continuing to investigate a fatal shooting involving Wetaskiwin RCMP officers and a 15-year-old.   

On Aug. 30, ASIRT was directed to begin an investigation.   

At 12:28 a.m., that day, police received a 911 call from a 15-year-old male who stated that he was being followed by people who wanted to harm him.   

2024/25 season gets underway this weekend for RDP soccer and cross country running teams

The Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Cross Country Running and Soccer teams will begin the 2024/2025 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season this weekend.

Ponoka farmer says harvest nearly 50 per cent complete

Alberta farmers have been taking advantage of the warm, sunny weather as they look to bring in this year's crop.

Josh Lubach farms around 4,000 acres just north of Ponoka. He says they have about 40 per cent of the crop in the bin. All of the barley is off and they're now working on wheat and starting to dip into a little bit of canola.

Red Deer Rebels sign forwards

The Red Deer Rebels have signed forwards Luke Jamieson and Nolan Schmidt. 

Both have signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the team. 

Jamieson was selected by the Rebels in round six, 126th overall at the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft. The 15-year-old Calgary native recorded 26 points (14 goals, 12 assists) in 27 games in 2023-24 with Edge School U15 Prep (CSSHL). 

Many people at risk never got their 2nd mpox vaccine dose, public health agencies say

Public health agencies are encouraging people who received a first dose of mpox vaccine over the last two years to make sure they get a second dose. 

Many people at risk for mpox exposure got vaccinated in Canada beginning in spring 2022, when a global outbreak of the virus was declared, Canada's chief public health officer said in a recent interview with The Canadian Press.

But a lot of them never got a second dose, which is recommended at least 28 days after the first shot.

Road closure in Gasoline Alley area starts Friday

Red Deer County is advising drivers that Lantern Street between Liberty Avenue and Leva Avenue will be partially closed for utility work from September 6th to September 10th. 

During the day, the east bound lanes will be open for general traffic. The west bound lane will be limited to access for local businesses and no through traffic during the day.

Other businesses can be serviced through the onsite detour plan. Two way traffic during the evening hours will be accommodated.

Girl, 15, lit on fire at Saskatoon high school, staff injured trying to help

A 15-year-old girl is in hospital with serious injuries after she was lit on fire at a Saskatoon high school, police said Thursday. 

Sgt. Ken Kane told reporters that a school resource officer, who was at Evan Hardy Collegiate for a different matter, apprehended a 14-year-old girl as a suspect.

He did not say how the victim was lit on fire or the extent of her burn injuries. 

"Our officer that was on scene was at the immediate area of the event within 30 seconds and had someone in custody within 60 seconds," he said.
