Accused Manitoba killer warned by judge his meth addiction could cost him his family

The man accused of killing five family members, including his three young children, was warned by a judge to get his methamphetamine addiction under control or risk losing everything.

Ryan Howard Manoakeesick faces five counts of first−degree murder in the deaths of his 30−year−old common−law partner, six−year−old daughter, four−year−old son and two−month−old baby girl, as well as his partner’s 17−year−old niece.

A judge had warned Manoakeesick years earlier that he needed help with his addiction before things "completely spiral out of control."

CCGA opens applications for the Cash Advance Payments Program

Farmers can now apply for the Federal Government's 2024 Cash Advance program.

The Advance Payments Program is a federal loan program that offers Canadian farmers marketing flexibility through interest-free and low-interest cash advances.

The Canadian Canola Growers Association (CCGA) -  one of the organizations that administers the program - began taking applications on Monday.

The early application process means qualified producers should have access to the money beginning April 1st.

Chinook’s Edge students to showcase musical talent in Olds

Junior and high school students from Chinook’s Edge are showcasing their musical talent through honour band.  

Dozens of band students were selected to participate in the tradition by their teachers.  

Honour band is an opportunity that happens in Chinook’s Edge once every two years, but this year is the first time since the pandemic.   

Slain Manitoba family identified in obituary, remembered as beautiful souls

A mother, her three young children, including a two−month−old daughter, and a teenage family member killed in Manitoba are being remembered as beautiful souls.

An obituary has identified the victims as Amanda Clearwater, her children, Bethany, Jayven, and Isabella Manoakeesick, and niece Myah−Lee Gratton.

Family and friends have also been sharing stories of the family on social media, calling their deaths tragic, unimaginable and a horrible nightmare.

Their bodies were found Sunday at multiple crime scenes in and around the town of Carman, southwest of Winnipeg.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigate homicide in Maskwacis

On Feb. 11, at 12:15 p.m., the Maskwacis RCMP received a report of a deceased person in a residence on 6 Mile on Samson Cree Nation.

Upon arrival, police located a deceased male. The circumstances around the death were suspicious and the Alberta RCMP Major Crime Unit took over the investigation. 

The deceased was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton. Police are treating the death as a homicide. The deceased has been identified as 26-year-old Gordelle Soosay.

Arrest made in hit and run collision in Three HIlls

On Feb. 7, 2024, at around 8:57 p.m., Three Hills RCMP responded to a hit and run collision involving a pedestrian on 6 Avenue N in Three Hills.

During the course of the investigation, Three Hills RCMP received a tip from the public that resulted in officers locating the suspect vehicle. RCMP attended the location where they identified and arrested the suspect driver.

A 40-year-old female resident of Three Hills has been charged with failing to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm.

Bowden student nominated for Indigenous Student Award

Bowden Grandview School has nominated Lisa Arnesen-Davidson, one of its Grade 9 students, for the Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award through the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA). The award recognizes First Nations, Métis and Inuit students in Alberta, “who model strength and commitment in the pursuit of their personal education path and embrace their own gifts, strengths and potential while celebrating the ways of their people.”
