The rapid and relentless spread of kochia, the highly adaptable and increasingly resistant weed, is moving north and taking root in places scientists thought it never would.

Arborist assessment leads to "danger tree" removal in Lacombe

The City of Lacombe recently removed several trees from the municipal reserve along Highway 2A, just south of Wilson’s Funeral Home.

This action followed a thorough assessment by certified arborists, who identified the trees as "danger trees" due to disease, structural instability or significant storm damage.

“These trees posed a substantial safety risk to residents and nearby property,” said the City.

“The decision to remove them was made in the best interest of public safety and in accordance with the City’s tree management and risk mitigation procedures.”

Former King named Head Coach of RDP Queens hockey

The Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Queens Hockey program will have a new coach behind the bench beginning in the 2025–26 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) season.

Brett Wold, a former student-athlete on the RDP Kings Hockey team, will take over the reins following the departure of Kelly Coulter.

Snowbirds fly over Red Deer as they head to Camrose Airshow

If you looked up last night (July 24), you may have spotted the unmistakable formation of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds soaring over Red Deer and the surrounding region.

The nine-jet team was on their way to Camrose, where they’ll headline this weekend’s Camrose Airshow at the Camrose Airport.

The CF Snowbirds, formally known as 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, are a beloved Canadian icon, made up of Canadian Armed Forces members and National Defense public service employees.

Updated road work schedule to impact Three Mile Bend access Sunday

UPDATE - Road work on Riverside Drive in Red Deer will impact Three Mile Bend Access.

Motorists are advised of changes to an upcoming road closure that will impact commute times and access along Riverside Drive, from 67 Street to 77 Street.

The paving schedule for Riverside Drive has been updated to July 27 only.

This work will require a full road closure and will impact access to Three Mile Bend from approximately 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sentencing for Freedom Convoy leaders Lich, Barber scheduled for Oct. 7

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, two leaders of the Freedom Convoy protest, are scheduled to be sentenced for mischief on Oct. 7 in an Ottawa courtroom.

In addition to lengthy prison sentences, the Crown wants to seize Barber's truck, which was used in the protest.

A forfeiture hearing on that matter is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Ontario Court Justice Heather Perkins-McVey said Thursday she wants to rule on the mischief sentence and truck forfeiture at the same time so that she does not deliver "piecemeal" decisions.
