Poilievre delivers first speech to AFN, leaders confront him about Harper's legacy

First Nations chiefs have heard enough promises and "performative reconciliation," Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Thursday, adding they deserve a partnership based on honest conversations.

It was the first time Poilievre was addressing the Assembly of First Nations, an organization representing more than 600 First Nations that had a tense relationship with the Conservatives when former prime minister Stephen Harper was in power.

The Provincial Government helps to beef up the agriculture industry

The Alberta Beef Industry is world renowned for having high-quality beef,

Beef was Alberta's largest agri-food export last year, and at $3.9 billion, it makes up 22 per cent of the province's total agri-food exports.

Because of the importance of the beef industry, both the Canadian and Alberta governments are going to provide the Alberta Beed Producers (ABP) with almost $1.9 million to go towards it's on-farm food safety program Verified Beef Production Plus (VBP+).

This funding will come through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Lacombe County issues fire advisory

Beginning on July 10, 2024, a Fire Advisory is in place for all of Lacombe County due to high temperatures and a lack of expected precipitation in the coming days.

These conditions are considered to be ideal "crossover" conditions, with high temperatures and low moisture creating extremely high-risk fire conditions.

During this time, Lacombe County is still issuing fire permits for minor burns, but Lacombe County will not be approving any permits for large-scale burn activity until conditions have improved.

Stettler Emergency Department temporarily closed

Due to an unexpected gap in physician coverage, the Stettler Hospital and Care Centre Emergency Department is temporarily closed, and will reopen tomorrow (July 11) at 8 a.m. 

During the temporary closure, nursing staff will remain on-site in the emergency department to provide triage and assessments to patients who present to the department.

Patients will be referred to alternative care options depending on their condition.

Red Deer RCMP seize firearms, stolen property from South Hill residence

On July 3, officers from the Red Deer RCMP Crime Reduction Team (CRT), with assistance from Red Deer RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS), Police Dog Services (PDS) and Wetaskiwin RCMP, successfully executed a search warrant at a residence in the South Hill area of Red Deer.

Officers recovered multiple items believed to be obtained through criminal activity, along with a significant quantity of cannabis products, firearms, ammunition, body armour, and a collection of valuable hockey card collectibles.

AFN head told chiefs draft child-welfare reform deal with Ottawa worth $47.8B: source

The head of the Assembly of First Nations has informed chiefs that a draft deal with Ottawa on child-welfare reforms is worth $47.8 billion, a source who was in the room says — more than double what was initially promised.

National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak revealed that number to chiefs and their proxies on Tuesday afternoon, says the source, who was granted anonymity because they were not authorized to share the details publicly.

Several people in Ontario have become sick with listeriosis in an outbreak that triggered a national recall of certain plant-based milks that may have been contaminated with Listeria. 

WHAT IS LISTERIA?

The Listeria bacterium is found in soil, sewage and untreated water. It can also be found in foods such as meat, seafood, fruits, vegetables and dairy products.
