Rebels sign two new players

The Red Deer Rebels are excited to announce that Cash Arcand-Vandale, the club’s second-round pick at the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft, has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the team.

The Saskatoon, SK native was selected 30th overall by the Rebels at the May 9 draft.

A forward listed at 6’1, 166 pounds, Arcand-Vandale collected 57 points (30 goals, 27 assists) in 27 games with the Saskatoon Bandits U15 squad in 2023-24. He added 12 points in three playoff contests and score one goal in five games played with Saskatoon Contacts U18 AAA.

Echo Food Rescue celebrates grand re-opening 

The Echo Food Rescue has expanded its facility, to continue fulfilling its mission of combating food waste.  

The grand re-opening of the facility is on May 26 at 2:30 p.m., before the regular food distribution time at 3 p.m.  

“We want to celebrate with a lot of the community members who come to the food rescue every week, and so that's just perfect timing,” said Christina Sturgeon, Echo Food Rescue Manager.   

Oilers fans predictions for Western Conference Finals

The Edmonton Oilers are now moving onto round-three of the NHL playoffs and the Western Conference Finals.

Game one of the best-of-seven series against The Stars goes tomorrow night in Dallas at 6:00 pm.

Oilers fans in Central Alberta have mixed feelings on how their team will do.

Jeff Demers, a long time fan since the early 80's, says he is not so sure. "I'm a diehard Oilers fan, but I just think that Dallas is too strong for Edmonton this year. Dallas have such a deep team this season. My prediction is Dallas 4, Oilers 2."

Canadians feel grocery inflation getting worse, 18% are boycotting Loblaw: poll

Almost two-thirds of Canadians feel that inflation at the grocery store is getting worse, a new poll suggests, even as food inflation has been steadily cooling.

A new Leger survey found that almost 30 per cent of Canadians believe food inflation has been primarily caused by grocery stores trying to increase profit margins. Another 26 per cent think it’s mostly due to global economic factors, while one in five blame the federal government

Inflation on groceries was 1.4 per cent in April and helped drive overall inflation lower to 2.7 per cent, Statistics Canada said.

Sylvan Lake seeking approval to use powder pesticide for goldfish infestation

Sylvan Lake town council is asking the provincial government for emergency approval to use the powder form of the Rotenone pesticide to control the infestation of goldfish in a storm pond.   

The town was first made aware of the goldfish invasion last May in the Lakeway Landing Central Storm Pond, and since, has been trying to figure out different ways to deal with the infestation.   

Red Deer Hospice releasing butterflies to celebrate, remember, and give hope 

The Red Deer Hospice Society is giving Central Albertans the opportunity to release a butterfly through the Annual Live Butterfly Campaign.   

Every year, Red Deer Hospice hosts a memorial butterfly release to remember and celebrate with the families who have had someone in hospice in the previous year.    

Central Alberta band earns gold medal at national competition

Didsbury High School band students came back from Toronto last week as national champions.

The concert band, and the school’s jazz combo called the Minor Six, both received a gold ranking at MusicFest, a national music festival. DHS’s band was invited after its performance at Acadia University last spring. DHS band director, Kirk Wassmer, said the event in Toronto welcomed 250 bands from across Canada and about 7,000 students. Also, the Minor Six was able to perform at The Rex, a traditional jazz venue.

Road closure for Blackfalds starts May 27th

The Town of Blackfalds would like to inform residents that the gravel portion of Vista Trail north of Valmont Street will be closed starting May 27 until further notice.

“The closure is a result of the exciting increased development in our community,” shared Director of Infrastructure and Planning Services Preston Weran, adding, “the road will soon undergo a permanent asphalt and concrete upgrade built by the developers in anticipation of a new multifamily community node. This is a positive step towards enhancing this neighbourhood for future growth.”
