Municipal Election 2022

Mayoral candidate Rick Shone is hoping to bring a new voice and a new vision to Winnipeg's future if elected.

"It wasn't an easy decision and I started thinking about it back in 2018," says Shone, one of the mayoral candidates. "I thought, we could use some people to come to the table and present some really solid ideas and to challenge some people who've been in politics and our leadership."

A group of residents living north of the Kenora bypass have expressed concerns to those running for council this fall.

With the upcoming election, Richard Cone says they have welcomed those running for council to a couple recent meetings where residents were able to question candidates on their concerns.

Residents north of the bypass are hoping for parity and equity when it comes to municipal taxes and services compared to urban residents.

The village of St. Pierre-Jolys Mayor and councillors have all been acclaimed.  

Raymond Maynard, mayor of the village, was first elected to council in 2002, then he took a break the following term and has since rejoined for the last three.  

After 16 years on council and now to be acclaimed again, Maynard says he hopes it’s because the residents of St Pierre are happy with the job he has been doing.  

Advanced voting for the 2022 Municipal By-Election occurs on October 8 and 15 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Teresa Sargent Hall in the Montrose Cultural Centre.

The municipal by-election is an opportunity for residents to select one City Councillor to fill a vacancy until the end of the current City Council term, ending in 2025.

There will be a new Trustee representing Grunthal in Ward 4 of the Hanover School Division and she is in by Acclamation.

How does Cheryl Froese feel about that?  “I'm not sure yet," she says with a smile. "We'll see in a month, yeah, still processing.” 

The Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce is hosting a City of Grande Prairie Municipal By-election All-Candidates Forum on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 via Zoom.

All candidates for the position of Councilor in the October 17 Municipal By-election in the City of Grande Prairie are invited to take part.

The Kenora & District Chamber of Commerce is giving voters the chance to learn more about the candidates running in this month's municipal election. 

Due to the larger than usual number of candidates running for council, the Chamber is introducing an open house. The format for the Open House will be like a trade show where tables will be set up for the candidates and voters can meet directly with the candidates and address their concerns and questions.

There will certainly be some familiar faces when the new council for the Rural Municipality of Piney is announced next month. 

Ward 1 Councillor Ken Prociw and Ward 2 Councillor Dale Edbom have each won their respective seats by acclamation. In Ward 3, incumbent David Beaudry is up against Jacob Dyck, while in Ward 4, there will be a new councillor, with Mark Bernard being acclaimed there.

There will also be a familiar face leading council as Reeve Wayne Anderson is back by acclamation.

The results are in, and the entire council for the R.M. of Montcalm has been acclaimed for the coming term. This includes Reeve Paul Gilmore who will fill the top job for a second term. 

"I consider elections to be an integral part of a vibrant democracy, and apathy is usually not a good sign I feel. But, there's a certain anxiety for candidates when they're going into elections, so I'm kind of glad that it's over and that I can once again concentrate on representing my rate payers," said Gilmore.

With municipal elections across the province set for October 26th, Portage has found itself in an enviable position.

With four candidates for Mayor and 14 candidates running for city council, Portagers will have plenty of options regarding who they’d like to see in power. Some of the areas around Portage have positions being acclaimed.

Deputy Mayor Brent Budz says it’s great to see people in the community interested in municipal politics.
