Fort Macleod RCMP and Alberta Internet Child Exploitation unit charge person with child pornography possession and more

A person from southern Alberta has been charged in connection to child pornography.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) Alberta Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit and the Fort Macleod RCMP executed a warrant at a residence in the community, which resulted in a person being charged with possession of child pornography, and more.

52-year-old Jerry Lee Thompson was arrested and has been charged with:

Bob Snodgrass rec plex fieldhouse closure extended

The Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex (BSRC) fieldhouse closure has been extended.  

The facility is set to reopen on Sept. 4.  

The fieldhouse, walking track, and small arena at the BSRC was originally scheduled to be closed from Aug. 25 to Aug. 29 for electrical upgrades and the installation of equipment in the small arena, which will service the expanded pool space.      

Former Calgary Flames player is returning to his Junior hockey roots in Okotoks

Corban Knight is once again an Okotoks Oiler, but this time as an assistant coach and director of player development.

The BCHL club made the announcement yesterday on their website and through social media.

Knight has a wealth of experience in the NHL, AHL, University hockey, international hockey with the KHL in Russia and in Switzerland with SC Bern.  He also suited up for Team Canada during the 2022 Olympics.

Alberta, citing oil prices and U.S. trade woes, says budget deficit rising to $6.5B

The bad news for Alberta's oil-reliant budget is set to get worse.

Finance Minister Nate Horner says softening oil prices mean this year's projected budget deficit is expected to grow by $1.3 billion, and will now finish at $6.5 billion in the red when the fiscal year ends next spring.

That represents a massive multibillion-dollar swing in Alberta's financial fortunes, as it is coming off an $8.3-billion surplus the year prior.

"We are going to have to weather some of this," Horner told a news conference Thursday.

Poll suggests 85% of Canadians want governments to regulate AI

A new poll indicates an overwhelming majority of Canadians are in favour of regulating artificial intelligence, and almost half are worried it will contribute to cognitive decline.

The Leger poll found 85 per cent of respondents believe governments should regulate AI tools to ensure ethical and safe use. More than half, 57 per cent, said they strongly agreed with that statement.

"It's very clear Canadians want government involved," said Jennifer McLeod Macey, senior vice-president at Leger.

Canada's sport system 'broken' and in need of change: report

A new national report on how abuse and maltreatment are handled in sport says "Canadian sport has lost its way" and the federal government must act to better protect athletes across the country. 

The Future of Sport in Canada Commission released its preliminary report Thursday, saying it heard that there are "deeply ingrained" issues across the country, from a culture of silence that has led to abuse and maltreatment to underfunding and a lack of diversity. 

It will be a warm, long weekend in the Foothills

It will be warm all weekend long, finishing off August with a bang.

According to Environment Canada Meteorologist, Crawford Luke, it will be hovering around 30 degrees all weekend.

"It looks like it should be kind of more of the same from what we've seen so far this week, just a lot of, you know, sunshine, warm temperatures, hot temperatures even," Luke explains. 

Luke adds that we'll have to keep an eye on potential afternoon showers closer to the mountains, but it looks as though it should be overall fairly dry, sunny, and hot for much of this weekend.

Claresholm warns residents of upcoming planned water shut down

The Town of Claresholm is advising residents of a planned temporary water shut down on Saturday (Aug. 30). 

The water service interruption is to facilitate work on the 4th Street West water project.  

Residents on the 400 block of 56th Avenue, 57th Avenue West, Claresholm, and all residents of the Claresholm Mobile Home Park will be affected.   

There are some upcoming facility closures in High River for the long weekend

The Labour Day Long Weekend is here, and there are a few facility closures in the Town of High River.  

On Monday, Sept. 1, the Town Hall, Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Greater Foothills Family Centre, Public Works, the Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex, Fire Hall and RCMP Administration offices, and the Recycling Centre will be closed.  

Emergency services will not be impacted by the closures.
