Bisons move to second place in the division after weekend split

The Carstar Okotoks Bisons find themselves in second place in their division after splitting the games over this past weekend.

The Medicine Hat Cubs are in first place with a 7-1-0 record while the Herd holds a 6-2-0 record which is good for second place in the HJHL Southern Division.

Okotoks were on the winning side on Friday night (Oct. 11) with a 5-2 win over the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings. Assistant captain Adam Kirkpatrick got on the board late in the first period to open up the scoring in the game. Kegan Law and Caden Scott both picked up helpers on the goal. 

Oilers hit the road for the BCHL Showcase after weekend win

The NHL's Vancouver Caunucks are hosting the BCHL Showcase this week and the Okotoks Oilers will be featured in two games.

The Green and Gold head into the showcase coming off of a big 6-3 win over the Prince George Spruce Kings on Friday night (Oct. 11) at Viking Rentals Centre.

It was the first time the Oilers and Spruce Kings have ever met in a regular-season game, with Okotoks now fully integrated into the BCHL.

Annual inflation falls to 1.6% in September, raises odds of 50-basis-point rate cut

The chances of a half-percentage point interest rate cut by the Bank of Canada became more likely Tuesday after Statistics Canada reported annual inflation fell to 1.6 per cent in September.

Economist Tu Nguyen of accounting and consultancy firm RSM Canada said she had expected the inflation rate to remain close to the central bank's two per cent target, where it was in August, for a few more months.

"This is one of the instances where I'm happy to be wrong," she said.

On Monday, the RCMP warned the public about a rash of crimes including murder, extortion and coercion that the force links to Indian government agents.

The RCMP and other Canadian officials presented evidence to India earlier this past weekend, but they say New Delhi refused to co-operate in police investigations.

A Christmas Carol meets the Sundance Kid as new play set to debut in Longview

The classic and much-beloved play and movie A Christmas Carol meets the Wild West this year in Longview at the Twin Cities Hotel and Saloon.

The Erratic Players, a local Okotoks theatre troupe is all set to debut 'The Sundance Carol' on Thursday, November 28th running until January 4, 2025.

Take extra care closing up seasonal properties, RCMP say

Now that the leaves are falling and there is a chill in the air, seasonal properties are going to begin getting closed up for the season.

Because of that, the Alberta RCMP are reminding people to make sure they have put in crime prevention measures while closing up seasonal property, especially if the property is going to be unattended for an extended period.

So far this year, there have been 348 break-ins at seasonal properties and cottages, which is an 8 per cent increase from last year.

Geotechnical work in Okotoks will cause lane closures

Some geotechnical work will occur in Okotoks next week as part of the Town's potable water distribution pipe network improvements.

The geotechnical work will occur along Milligan Drive, Waldron Ave, and near the North Reservoir Tennis Courts.

The work is anticipated to begin the week of October 14, and the work is expected to last several days if the weather permits.
