Portage Terriers

The Portage Terriers faced some adversity late but were able to fend off the Winnipeg Freeze for the second straight night. The Terriers came away with a 6-5 victory and extended their win streak to four games.

Another streak was extended in the first period as Daniel Siso fed a cutting Ryan Botterill, who ripped a shot low on the blocker side to open the scoring. Botterill has a goal in three straight games and has ten goals in his last ten games.

The Portage Terriers are now winners of three straight games. Portage's own Ryan Botterill chipped in on every goal in Winnipeg last night to help the Dogs pick up a 4-1 victory over the Freeze.

The Freeze opened the scoring on the power-play but Botterill responded less than two minutes later, and it was all Terriers from there. 

Brandon McCartney gave the Terriers the lead later in the first, and Botterill extended it to 3-1 when he put home his 25th goal of the year just 45 seconds into the second period.

The Portage Terriers are looking to extend their winning streak to three games, as they travel to Winnipeg to battle the Freeze. 

The Dogs rebounded from a few losses this past weekend as Jayden Catellier stopped a combined 65 shots in two games against the Selkirk Steelers. The goaltender earned an MJHL Star of the Week nod for these performances.

Jayden Catellier's excellent performances against the Selkirk Steelers this past weekend have earned him an MJHL Star of the Week.

The Terriers goaltender played a set of back-to-back games against the Steelers, making 65 saves in the two games combined and only allowing one goal all weekend. Catellier helped guide the Dogs to 2-1 and 2-0 victories, which snapped a three-game losing skid for the Dogs.

Catellier was the Terrier team MVP last season, and he has a record of 15-4 this year, with a 2.70 goals-against-average and a 0.906 save percentage.

The action-packed MJHL/SJHL Showcase came to a close yesterday in Winnipeg after three high-scoring contests.

Terrier representatives Daniel Siso and Brandon McCartney fared quite well on day one but yesterday their team was on the wrong end of a 6-0 loss.

The second game of the day was a little more favourable for the Manitoban squad. MJHL 20U Red defeated SJHL 20U White 4-2, and Portage’s Hayden Lacquette was named one of the two stars of the game. The Terriers' leading-scorer picked up two points and scored the lone goal in the third period.

Eight Portage Terriers hit the ice yesterday in Winnipeg for the first day of the MJHL/SJHL Showcase. The best players from each league were split into six teams to put their talent on display in front of scouts from the NCAA to the NHL.

The first game of the day saw SJHL 20U Gold defeat MJHL 20U Red 4-1. While no Terriers were able to get on the scoresheet in this one, defenceman Hayden Lacquette and Kian Calder were paired together, and Portage's leading-scorer Ryan Botterill shared the ice with two Waywayseecappo Wolverines, Boone Mathison and Carson Baptiste.

It started as a regular night of hockey for the Portage Terriers and Winnipeg Blues just over seven years ago on November 12th, 2015. But it certainly didn't end that way. Following a routine collision with another player, Terrier player Braden Pettinger crashed into the boards. The end result was a C5 (neck) spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

The Portage Terriers are back in the win column. The Dogs downed the Selkirk Steelers 2-1 in a very physical outing at Stride Place.

The first period saw a lot of end-to-end play, with the biggest scoring chance coming for Selkirk.

Terrier goaltender Jayden Catellier stretched out to make a save but the puck went wide, hit the end boards, and ended up on the other side of the net. As Catellier was sliding across, a Steeler went to tap the puck in, but he was denied by the side of the net and the skate of the Portage netminder.

The Portage Terriers are disappointed in their start to Wednesday night's game. The Dogs have now lost three consecutive games as the Steinbach Pistons left Stride Place with a 5-3 victory.

Travis Hensrud and Noah Szabo were able to find the back of the net in the first to give the Pistons a two-goal lead after 20 minutes. Terrier defenceman Matt McLeod says goalie Bailey Monteith did what he could to keep them in the game early.
