CMU students head to Guatemala

A 23-year-old university student from Steinbach is taking a semester abroad in Guatemala.  

Hannah Friesen, 23, is entering her fourth year at Canadian Mennonite University (CMU). She left with her classmates on Friday, Sept. 6, and will be in Guatemala for three months.  

She is going through CMU’s program, "Estamos," which offers studies abroad in various destinations.  

RCMP arrest armed and dangerous man

The Manitoba RCMP are looking for a man with 14 charges who is currently considered armed and dangerous.

David Penner, 35, is wanted by both Manitoba and Saskatchewan RCMP for charges including:

  • Theft of a Motor Vehicle x2
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime x4
  • Theft x7
  • Mischief

The RCMP has noted that Penner travels between the two provinces and advises citizens not to approach if located. If you have any information regarding Penner, you're asked to call the Treherne RCMP at 204-723-2024 with tips.

Steinbach Mayor dons Flyers jersey after losing bet to Winkler Mayor

The Mayor of Steinbach sported a Winkler Flyers jersey at Tuesday night's city council meeting. 

Steinbach Mayor Earl Funk and Winkler Mayor Henry Siemens started a tradition last year where every time the Pistons and the Flyers meet each other in the playoffs, the losing mayor has to wear the winning team's jersey.

After a Steinbach woman sounded the alarm about a popular health supplement causing severe damage to her health, many people are wondering how to ensure the supplements they take are actually safe and helpful. 

Leane Janz from Good n’ Natural in Steinbach, Man., says that in order to sell a supplement in Canada, it is required that Health Canada first approve that product. 

Mennonite Heritage Village launches exhibit with 8-foot-wide photos from 1890

The Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) has opened up a new exhibit called "Mennonite Heritage Photography: Views from Manitoba 1890-1940."

The photographs used in the exhibit from Johann E. Funk come from MHV’s artifact collection, which contains almost four dozen of his glass plate negatives.  

These small glass plates (approximately 5” x 7”, though some are smaller) are over 100 years old.
