Chain reaction: Used bikes roll out cheap in Airdrie
With the May long weekend approaching, the City of Airdrie is offering a low-cost option to get rolling: adult bikes for $20, youth bikes for $10.
The seasonal sale is part of the city’s reuse program and runs from early May through the end of September at the Airdrie Recycle Depot.
"The bike program is offered so residents may enjoy bikes at an affordable cost," the city said. "Resale for profit is not the intent of the program and is not permitted."
Update: Airdrie emergency crews respond to incident on 8th Street
Emergency crews responded to an incident on 8 Street southbound near the Tim Hortons on Thursday morning, temporarily blocking at least one lane, according to a witness.
An eyewitness reported seeing fire, police and EMS vehicles at the scene. The area was later cleared and traffic resumed.
Officials did not confirm the nature of the response. No further details were released.

Bear closure issued in Kananaskis ahead of May long weekend
Alberta Parks has issued a bear-related trail closure in Kananaskis Country just ahead of the May long weekend.
A closure notice was posted May 14 for the Rockwall Trail and the meadow surrounding the Peter Lougheed Discovery Centre. The closure remains in effect until further notice due to multiple bears frequenting the area.
Airdrie home listings surge, but benchmark price stays flat
Airdrie’s active housing inventory rose 170.6 per cent year-over-year in April, reaching 433 units, according to the Calgary Real Estate Board’s April 2025 regional housing statistics.
Despite the supply increase, the city’s total residential benchmark price held at $544,700 — the same as April 2024.
The board listed the benchmark price for detached homes in Airdrie at $654,300 in its regional pricing breakdown. That reflects a 1.8 per cent increase over the previous year.
Military convoys to move through Alberta as G7 security operation begins
Military convoys will begin rolling through Edmonton and Calgary tonight as the Canadian Armed Forces start moving vehicles and personnel to Kananaskis for next month’s G7 Summit, the RCMP confirmed Wednesday.
The Canadian Armed Forces will support the RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG), which oversees security operations for the international summit. Road movements are scheduled nightly through May 30.

Olds student filmmaker wins big with safety message
Micah Griffin, a grade 12 student at Koinonia Christian School, won first place in a nationwide video contest.
He found out a few weeks after discovering he had won at the provincial level.
According to Chinook's Edge School Division, SafeGen, which is a part of CAREERS the Next Generation, ran the competition. To compete, students had to submit a safety video they created themselves.
One of his teachers encouraged Griffin to join. He was automatically entered at the national level due to his victory at the provincial level.

According to the school division, when students are assessed provincially, results are reported as intervention required/not required.
