For many people summer is a time for relaxing and enjoying the warm weather. It’s a time for perhaps relaxing and doing some summer reading or maybe heading out to the cottage; or perhaps just simply taking a walk up the street to the nearest 7-11 and picking up a Slurpee.

Manitoba Underground Opera (MUO) has a way of reinterpreting the classics: taking lesser heard, rarely staged productions and giving them a new voice for a modern audience.  

Known for innovative and adventurous programming, Winnipeg’s Flipside Opera and Art Song Collective continues to engage audiences in unique ways with their annual fundraiser taking place this weekend.  

One of the most popular Disney musicals of all time returns to Canada’s largest open-air theatre. 

Rainbow Stage presents “The Little Mermaid,” opening Thursday, August 17.   

This Friday, August the 11th and this Saturday, August the 12th, there will be a very special film screening that will be taking place, which combines the two worlds of film making and art.

August is most certainly here in Winnipeg. The weather is warm, the mosquitoes are out, the BDI is open and construction abounds throughout the city. With these warm summery temperatures it is the perfect time to perhaps sit on a park bench or maybe stay inside and enjoy the air conditioning and read a good book.

Folklorama is just around the corner, and to get the community excited for the only multi-cultural festival of its kind everyone is invited to join in on the kick-off event happing on Saturday.

"It's really a good opportunity for people to come and have a little taste of the festival, a little preview," says Teresa Cotroneo, executive director of Folklorama. "We've got different performers from pavilions that are participating, which is always really cool."

This week, cinephiles celebrate as the 23rd Gimli International Film Festival presents a full five-day schedule with over 90 films offered as part of the organization’s mission to inspire, educate, and empower audiences, while celebrating the art of film and the film community here in Manitoba.
