Ukrainian ancestry inspires visual song, now on display

Local author and artist, Margaret Shaw-MacKinnon is using her great-grandparent's story of migrating to Canada as inspiration for her latest artistic project.

Margaret Shaw-MacKinnon has her exhibit Ukraine: Close to Home on display at the Mennonite Heritage Centre (MHC) Gallery alongside Leaving Canada: The Mennonite Migration to Mexico by the Mennonite Heritage Village and supporters.

Juno jazz and classical winners

The celebration of Canada's musical best officially got underway over the weekend.

On Saturday, March 11, more than 40 awards were presented at the 2023 Juno Opening Night Awards in Edmonton, including in the classical and jazz categories. 

Winners (and some of their online reactions) are noted in bold. 

The Juno Awards ceremony will air on Monday, March 13, televised and broadcast from Rogers Place. 

 

Manitoba Government supporting community initiatives

The provincial government is pleased to share another successful quarter of funding community events to strengthen Manitoba's art, culture and sports sectors.

In August 2022, the Arts, Culture and Sport in Community Fund was established in an effort to support the arts, culture (heritage, public libraries and ethnocultural organizations) and amateur sports.

Celebrating women in jazz with the WWJO

The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) celebrates this year’s International Women's Day’s campaign theme #EmbraceEquity with an all-female lineup of players and a special nod to Winnipeg Women composers and arrangers.  

“It’s a great group of musicians, all Manitoba-based women,” says conductor and curator of the concert Alexis Silver.  

Return of the Swan

Breathtaking choreography. Sumptuous orchestration. An undisputed classic.  

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents Swan Lake at the Centennial Concert Hall as part of their 2022/23 season. 

“Adrenaline is high,” says RWB Associate Artistic Director Tara Birtwhistle, noting that “everyone is looking forward to getting back on stage.”  

Last offered in an online video titled Visions of Swan Lake – a virtual, abridged version recorded during the pandemic – this current production marks the full-scale return of the iconic ballet.
