I Love to Read: McNally Robinson Booksellers and Classic 107 celebrate the gift of literacy with Dalhousie School
Earlier today Classic 107’s own Chris Wolf stopped by Dalhousie School to read to a class of Grade five students. Dalhousie school was the first winner of the “I Love to Read” contest with McNally and Classic 107 for this month of February. This is a contest that rejoices in the fact that February is “I Love to Read Month.”
Chris and his colleague Rachel Olson stopped by Dalhousie School with a bag full of books for the students at school, and the teacher/librarian that entered the school into the contest Tamara Petkau.
Celebrated conductor Seiji Ozawa dead at 88
The world-renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa died of heart failure on Tuesday at the age of 88. The news was announced by his management on Friday.
In 1959, the Japanese-born maestro won first prize at an international competition for young conductors in France.
Ozawa spent time studying with the renowned Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan in Germany before he caught the attention of American maestro Leonard Bernstein. This paved the way for him to become assistant conductor at the New York Philharmonic in 1961.
Light and Shadow: Winnipeg Wind Ensemble Performs second concert of the season
This Sunday, February 11th at 3:00pm at The Lutheran Church of the Cross, the Winnipeg Wind Ensemble will be presenting their second concert of the 2023-24 season.
Called Light and Shadow, this concert explores the joys and darker moments of the human experience; everything from deep emotional loss to the blisses of experiencing the simple things in life.
Kids Helping Kids: Manitoba Registered Music Teachers’ holds their 35th annual Musicthon
This weekend, Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11, the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers’ Association (MRMTA) will be hosting their annual Kids Helping Kids Musicthon. This is an event that is now in its 35th year. The main purpose is to raise money for music programs for disadvantaged youth and give back to the Winnipeg community.
2024 Juno nominees revealed
Canada's biggest names in music are set to make their way to Halifax for the 53rd annual Juno Awards.
The 2024 nominees were announced Tuesday morning. Juno week runs from Thursday, March 21 through Sunday, March 24, culminating with The JUNO Awards Broadcast hosted by Nelly Furtado at the Scotiabank Centre.

‘Forward Unto Dawn”: UMSO performs music of Mendelssohn, Schumann alongside a world premiere
The University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra dives headfirst into a program of fiery, forceful and exciting German repertoire paired alongside a brand-new work by a student composer.
“This whole program ties itself together in, what I termed, ‘Forward unto Dawn,’ the title of the program” says UMSO Music Director Chen. “Going from some very dark places (musically)... but really going forwards toward a more optimistic ending.”
‘It gives kids a chance’: A concert in support of Sistema Winnipeg
The “power of music” will be on full display this weekend as Sistema Winnipeg presents a concert in support of the program.
In partnership with the Seven Oaks and Winnipeg School Divisions, the afterschool initiative aims to help youth make a difference in their world and communities through the skills and connections developed through music.
MCMA marks Black History Month by exploring music from the Caribbean
Throughout this month of February on Thursday nights at 7:00pm, the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts is offering a four week vocal workshop that explores music from the Caribbean.
The course will cover various repertoire from reggae to calypso, to music from the more modern eras. The course will also feature the impact that such legends as Harry Belafonte, Jackie Opel, and Bob Marley had on music from the Caribbean.

February is Black History Month and throughout the month, in the 1:00 p.m. hour, Classic 107 will be featuring music written by Black composers. Tune in throughout the first complete week of February (Feb. 5 to 9) as we will feature the marvelous, and gorgeous music of English composer Samuel Coleridge Taylor.
Starting on Monday the 5th we will be putting to air his romantic and beautifully Dvorak-influenced 'Piano Quintet in G minor.'
